"one cannot take partial without whole." I like this line - your speaker is an obvious admirer of Lincoln. He has a lot of critics. So - That line basically says - was he a good man or was he a bad man? You can't just pick out the good things he did and say he was bad except for those few things ... I like this one better than the first by the way - not that the first necessarily needed any changes, this one just reads more clear to me.

No critique warranted for catharsis. I still remember the two separate phone calls I received.

Without question it works, and each can find their own sense in this.

For me, it was a young man, alone, distant from family, even if on a battlefield or VA hosptial.

I won't step on anyones answer other than to say, I have felt the emotionsn heavily expressed in this.
