A repost. Does this poem work?

did he smile

as his heart gave out

that morning in July?

a thousand miles from home--

he was only 25

a year of antiseptic hums and

focused beams of light

a tv turned down low

the bed-pan--out of sight

a curtain pulled

a breakfast tray

no one to say goodbye...

open sores and wasted limbs

the agonizing ‘why?’

a phone call and a crashing

a sobbing into fists

I sat among tall grasses

on a sandy precipice

a lightning storm above the lake

slashed and tore the sky--

the puppet-master pulling strings,

making people die.

it seems like only yesterday

a million miles away

I miss you, brother--

since you left

it hasn’t been the same.

"one cannot take partial without whole." I like this line - your speaker is an obvious admirer of Lincoln. He has a lot of critics. So - That line basically says - was he a good man or was he a bad man? You can't just pick out the good things he did and say he was bad except for those few things ... I like this one better than the first by the way - not that the first necessarily needed any changes, this one just reads more clear to me.

No critique warranted for catharsis. I still remember the two separate phone calls I received.

Without question it works, and each can find their own sense in this.

For me, it was a young man, alone, distant from family, even if on a battlefield or VA hosptial.

It does indeed work and is very moving. I can't imagine this pain. Your words are very close and conveying that despair.
