Can I safely disable auto start-up components for Nero and Cyberlink programs that are used only occasionally?

I have both Nero Essentials and Cyberlink Power DVD and Producer installed on my Windows XP computer. I never use the Cyberlink programs (but might want to in the future), and I use the Nero programs only occasionally. When I ran Sysinternals' AutoRuns, it turned up 72 Nero and 35 Cyberlink auto start-up entries under Logon, Explorer, Services, and Codecs. If I just disable these startup entries, should I still be able to use the Nero and Cyberlink programs when I need to, allowing for a slower loading time?

Yes it'll be fine: Nero and Cyberlink aren't vital parts of Windows XP so you should try disabling them as it may free up your system tray (on the bottom-right of your screen). If a problem occurs you can easily re-enable the auto startup.

I use msconfig to disable programs all the time. You've gotta be careful with some things though - NEVER disable anything to do with Google update, Java update or Adobe update. Those things are for very important security patches.

You can disable or even delete them from the startup without causing any issues. You can use MSCONFIG but for me, I use the Startup Manager of the free CCleaner to do this. CCleaner has other useful features as well.

I also disable Google Updates (I consider it as the world's #1 but legal spyware), Adobe and Java updates. I just check their websites or filehippo.com once in a while for updated versions. You can even subscribe at filehippo.com so it will send you an email when one of those programs are updated. You really don't need to have them running all the time. They take up some of your resources.
