Has the transgender movement overshadowed support 4 the eradication of gender?

I'm not sure exactly how to phrase what I'm thinking here best, but I'll try..

as a teen, I always hated all sexism, homophobia, and bias about how men or women "should" act or look. I always felt that these ideas about what makes someone masculine or feminine have nothing to do with your body, that regardless of being male or female you can like what you want, experss yourself how you want, date who you want, that none of that should matter.

Now that I know about trans* people and the trans* movement within activist circles is getting more and more known, I get the impression that a lot of people who used to feel as I do (that gender doesn't really exist, that we should just be free to be ourselves without attaching labels to it or associating gender with any specific traits) are now more concerned with labeling precisely what they are, with combing over all their characteristics to find a long description of who they are, and if that doesn't cover it, they say that their gender changes regularly. I appreciate that for some trans people, it is really really important to them to be recognised as a specific gender, and that being called the wrong one makes them feel really bad, and I will refer to them however they tell me they want me to. But.. I feel like it's all gotten really complicated now, that everything has to be labelled and people are getting so offended if you can't keep up with their latest label for themselves. Why are the labels so important? why do we need so many labels when we could just get rid of them altogether? why do we have to keep debating what masculine or feminine means when these are just old traditional labels for gender roles that no longer serve us?

Update:

I don't want everyone to be the same, far from it. I want diversity, and for everyone to be themselves. I guess I just don't understand what being male or female gendered means. I don't feel it myself. I know what sex I am but I don't feel who I am has a gender because I don't know what that means. what is the difference between male and female gender? how can you know what each feels like? when people say they feel gender, what are they feeling? is it related to our ideas of masculinity and femininity, and if not, then what?

Your problem is that the label you've put on "gender" is too large. You're conflating "gender roles" and "gender Identity". These are two distinct things.

When trans people talk about gender and gender labels, we mean the intrinsic sense of gender that each of us has. It's the deep-down certainty that you're a man or woman (or in the case of genderqueer people, the sense of fluidity). This gender cannot be escaped, cannot be eliminated and cannot be ignored; it's too much a part of your core identity.

"Gender role" is socially imposed. This is what the radfems talk about when they speak of 'eliminating gender'. Outdated patriarchal notions of "women's work" and restrictive rules on behaviour, dress, wages, work options and so many more. This is what you want to eliminate. Your work is in the social sphere. More power to you.

oftentimes as quickly as I see or hear "i do no longer decide for to reason offense" there's a reasonably solid risk i'm going to be indignant. in my opinion I even have got here across extra prejudice interior the L.G.B community then I do interior the general inhabitants. With that how ever I do thank those that do help us. i don't comprehend this consistent argument between distinctive communities. all of us face various of the comparable struggles. Bigotry, discrimination, hate crimes. it somewhat is subsequently I even have distanced myself from the L.G.B. community. i do no longer choose the further rigidity from those that would desire to comprehend. you're saying you're "in specific situations bi". thrilling, i will't be some situations Transsexual. So how does that artwork, your bi whilst its handy? i've got not got that luxurious. I comprehend what you recommend via no longer needing us on your combat. we could take that assertion litterly for a minute. we could say you and how approximately FreedomFighter, You the two do no longer decide for us. You the two project a photograph of being very fem. we could say a pair of highway thug gay bashers thoughts-set you. i visit think of you're in deep dodo. comparable scene, you and a trans that has various years martial arts journey, in numerous distinctive disciplines, maybe holds a third dregree black belt, instructor, weapons education, and whilst they have been attempting to stay as there delivery intercourse they occurred to be an extremely solid highway fighter. Who do you opt for in that combat now. My factor is all of us have differnt levels of expertice that we are in a position to convey to the combat. Now then your assertion you made. "the finished act of mutilating oneself or "dressing up" like the alternative intercourse". I, and probably another Transsexual considers there delivery intercourse as a delivery disease. can we agree on that? if so we could say we've a newborn with a cleft palette. might that's mutilating that toddler to maximum appropriate that delivery disease with surgical treatment. Dressing up like the alternative intercourse. Thats a interesing assertion in its self. So I would desire to assume you have by no ability wore a men sweat shirt, or maybe a men hoodie or jacket, what a pair of ballcap. confident you're intitled on your opinion. you have studied a sprint. for my section, which i'm intitled to you will desire to study so plenty extra so as which you do no longer look so retarded.

    Gender exists.

    Its in our DNA.

Instead of trying make us all homogenous (boring!) we should be celebrating our differences.
