  • Christians: why did there have to be a sacrifice, anyways?

I'm trying to understand the story that Christianity is based around, but I don't really get the whole sacrifice thing. Why did God need a sacrifice? And why did he sacrifice himself to himself? What is the point of a sacrifice to a God who is omnipotent, can't he make whatever he wants?

  • How to lower the volume of iTunes 11?

After updating to iTunes 11 I'm finding the lowest volume is too loud for me when using earphones on my laptop. Is there any way to lower the overall volume range? Also, before I updated, it was linked to the normal macbook volume controls, now it's no longer linked: even if my laptop is muted iTunes continues to play on at whatever it's volume is. How can I get it to be mutable again without having to stop the track playing? It does not respond to me lowering the volume on the computer.

  • If someone is bigender or fluid gender, what about them is changing?

If one is constantly shifting between male and female, then what about them is changing? Are they not the same person? Does their personality change, do they have multiple personalities? If one feels that their gender has changed, then what is it precisely about them that has changed?

  • Am I the only woman who thinks the card scene in Love Actually is creepy and not romantic?

I'm talking about the storyline where Andrew Lincoln's character is obsessed with the Keira Knightley character and professes his love to her on cards. In real life, if a guy's so-called best friend offered to videotape his wedding and then spent several hours doing close ups of the wife's face, then showed up at their house on Xmas to secretly profess his love for her, that wouldn't be romantic. It would be creepy, and a betrayal of his friendship. Why is this supposed to be romantic? In real life, if a psychologically healthy man fancied his best friend's woman, he wouldn't videotape closeups of her face at said friend's wedding. that is the behavior of a psycho. Are there any other women who agree with me?

  • How can someone have more than one gender?

what does gender even mean then? if we're saying there's a difference between genders (otherwise why label them if they're all the same right?) but then some say they are more than one. I just don't understand how it's possible. isn't that an oxymoron? wouldn't it make more sense to say you have no gender?

  • Why is "technical" virginity so important to people?

I just don't understand all these people who try to tip toe around the outskirts of virginity, why, so they can say to themselves they're still a virgin, even though they put it in a little bit? or put it in a different hole, or wore a condom so it doesn't count, right? right??!! Why does it matter?

What does virginity even matter if it's some technical set of rules that one can get around easily, and still do a thousand different sexual things while still "technically" clutching onto the v word?

If you want to be a virgin for religious reasons, then surely God still knows you're doing dirty deeds anyways so you might as well go all the way. so either actually abstinent and pure, or stop pretending you are and just have fun.

If you're trying to stay a virgin because of what other people think, then lie about, they don't need to know what you've done in private.

I can't think of any other reason you'd want to hold onto that term for yourself. If it's because you want to "save" it for someone special, yet you have saved nothing else at all for them, why kid yourself?

I just don't get it. Either be sexual and explore things at whatever pace feels right, or choose not to be sexual, (I totally respect that) but why get obsessed over detailed definitions of what virginity is just so you can try to trick yourself into pretending you are holding something "special" even though you're doing all kinds of sexual acts.

Can anyone explain this phenomenon to me?

  • Has the transgender movement overshadowed support 4 the eradication of gender?

I'm not sure exactly how to phrase what I'm thinking here best, but I'll try..

as a teen, I always hated all sexism, homophobia, and bias about how men or women "should" act or look. I always felt that these ideas about what makes someone masculine or feminine have nothing to do with your body, that regardless of being male or female you can like what you want, experss yourself how you want, date who you want, that none of that should matter.

Now that I know about trans* people and the trans* movement within activist circles is getting more and more known, I get the impression that a lot of people who used to feel as I do (that gender doesn't really exist, that we should just be free to be ourselves without attaching labels to it or associating gender with any specific traits) are now more concerned with labeling precisely what they are, with combing over all their characteristics to find a long description of who they are, and if that doesn't cover it, they say that their gender changes regularly. I appreciate that for some trans people, it is really really important to them to be recognised as a specific gender, and that being called the wrong one makes them feel really bad, and I will refer to them however they tell me they want me to. But.. I feel like it's all gotten really complicated now, that everything has to be labelled and people are getting so offended if you can't keep up with their latest label for themselves. Why are the labels so important? why do we need so many labels when we could just get rid of them altogether? why do we have to keep debating what masculine or feminine means when these are just old traditional labels for gender roles that no longer serve us?

  • Best ultralight 2 person, 3 season tent under £230?

I'm looking for a good quality tent that 2 people about 5'10'' tall could comfortably sleep in, which is 2.5 kg or less preferably. Something that can handle plenty of wind, rain and sun, but won't be used sub zero temps.

  • Why did it used to be ok (to God) to kill innocent children, take slaves, and rape women?

"the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Avenge the children of Israel of the Midianites ... And they warred against the Midianites, as the LORD commanded Moses; and they slew all the males. And the children of Israel took all the women of Midian captives, and their little ones ... And they burnt all their cities.... And Moses was wroth with the officers ... And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive? ... Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves. Numbers 31:1-18

"the LORD our God delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people. And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain: Deuteronomy 2:33-34

"when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them. Deuteronomy 7:2, 7:16

"25:44 Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids.

25:45 Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession.

25:46 And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: (Leviticus)

  • Why did God promote murder and rape, but now is all about love?

In the OT, he has the Hebrews slaughter a bunch of people, many times, including innocent children, and keep alive only the virgin girls so they can rape them. Then in the NT suddenly he's all different, telling everybody to turn the other cheek and stuff. I don't understand - why such a change of mind? If rape and murder are wrong, why did they used to be ok?

  • Christians: do you ever fear that God could change his mind and decide to change the rules again?

Since God changed the rules big time when he sent Jesus, couldn't he change the rules again? Like before, in the old testament, it was all about abiding by a big set of rules and doing lots of rituals, and destroying other tribes at God's command. Then Jesus came and it was all about having faith. Now people view the OT as being a different phase from now, where God is seen as compassionate. but, he wasn't always like that, he could change his mind again and start picking a group of people and saying they're the chosen ones and they have to destroy everybody else.

  • Why is contraception seen as a women's issue?

Now obviously when talking about the pill and such, these are taken by the woman, but it takes a man to make a baby. So any man who wants to have sex with his wife/girlfriend as much as possible, should be in support of contraception, because without it, he wouldn't get laid very often. Any couple who want to delay having children or only have a couple need to either use birth control, or not have sex. Or, there is the rythm method which involves not having sex at least half the month (and which fails a lot of the time).

So really, the war on contraception is not a war on women but a war on sex. Any man who wants to have sex for reasons other than becoming a father would not want contraception taken away, would he?
