Pull down the status bar, tap on the USB notification, click the button below the android guy with the USB key for an arm. He'll turn orange and you can then access your files on your pc?

For the latest update, you'll need Samsung kies software. Since that tends to be temperamental, i recommend downloading the firmware.tar.md5 and flashing it in ODIN.

I would also check out CM9 for that phone. It's really nice.

in the notification drawer (on the phone) there should be a USB icon as long as it's plugged in properly.

I had this main issue as well and it turned out the USB twine I was once utilizing didn't include my cellphone. Even though it would charge by way of my computer, it would not appreciate the mobilephone and allow data transfer. I borrowed my co-employees cord which was an android cord, plugged it in, and it instantly recognized the telephone.
