How to tell if my hen is a rooster?

I have 4 Chinese Silky chickens. The reputable breeder we bought them from when they were 6 weeks old said they were all definitely hens. They are now 3 months old and one is starting to crow just in the mornings when I let them out. She is not the dominant female and has no apparent physical male (that I can tell or perhaps he/she's still too young).

It is not possible to tell if Silkies are going to be male or female at 6 weeks old. Very often they don't show their sex until much later than this. If your bird is crowing it is a rooster. Since he was sold to you as being definitely a hen, you should take him back and either get a refund or an exchange, if you only want hens.

Hens will crow sometimes during molting (hormone imbalances), to show dominance, etc. However, if she's not dominant, I would assume she is a Mr. Call up the breeder and say that you got a cockerel in the bunch. Funny she sold you with a near guarantee. I didn't sell any chicks this year as a guarantee, but I didn't hatch out any sex-linked birds.
