I personally like VLC player since it can play videos and music, plus it is free. It seems to handle my video files in HD just fine too.

I'm with Paladin, go with VLC, it plays almost everything, it's easy to add codecs and upgrade, and its easier/faster to use than the other players. Plus it's free. On a list of best to worst, I'd go

Quicktime
Windows Media Player
Divx

VLC is pretty good, there's also Winamp for music and movies but it's more limited in the video department, does have great visualiser animations though.

It is not VLC. Try PotPlayer...you'll never use VLC again.

PotPlayer has so many more customizations and controls compared to VLC, especially if you want to capture or convert video or you you want better options with subtitles...the list goes on and on.
