What happens to the Olympic stadiums after they are used?

Like in London... once the games are over, the stadium, the equipment for special effects that took 40 days to install etc... what becomes of it?

In London, the equipment used for the effects of the opening ceremonies are already being dismantled and/or recycled. The stadium itself is supposed to be rebuilt as a 25,000 seat soccer stadium, but there are problems with that. One team, West Ham United, supposedly has an exclusive contract. A second team, Tottenham Hotspur, said not so fast, and is taking West Ham and the stadium management to court. And everybody is criticizing the fact that the closest seat to the soccer field will be 50 meters away.

But all of the structural steel and other materials removed when the stadium is rebuilt will be recycled into other construction projects.

Overall, the best answer is 'it depends'. It depends on how well they are designed, what spectator sports are popular in the country, how affluent the area is, etc. Beijing's famous 'Birds Nest' has been almost completely unused since the 2008 games ended. There was talk of building a mall and hotel next to the stadium, but they have been talking about that for four years now. The Stadium in Athens is used for two of the local soccer teams, although one of those two is thinking about moving out, and another team has already moved out. They don't like the fact that even with a good crowd, they are playing in front of 50,000 empty seats. Stadium Australia in Sydney is having similar problems, even with the capacity reduced from 110,000 to 85,000.

One stadium that did things right was the Atlanta Olympic Stadium. They were completely open about the fact that half of the stadium was temporary, and would be dismantled after the games. The remainder of the stadium was rebuilt as a home for the Atlanta Braves baseball team, and is used more than 80 times each year. Ironically, these very plans to not have a white elephant on their hands was the subject of some brutal and ignorant criticism by then IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch.

I don't know about other countries, but in Greece we let them rot. They serve as venues for rock concerts two or three times a year at best.

And the Olympic village is now the home of some lucky working-class families who somehow managed to get those houses for free, or very cheap in any case.

Individual companies have already purchased the venues, however, as was seen in Beijing and Athens, not all the venues were bought by companies for after the olympics, and they are currently wasting away.

Some are razed or retro-fitted for other usage....for the main stadium, everything is done to make sure it will be used for professional/amateur sports -- but, many times, they end up as monuments to a financial boondoggle.

then they use it for something else.

west ham and tottenham wanted to use the olympic stadium as their home ground. i think west ham won that bid. i'm not too sure.

USUALLY, well most of the time it stays. So that way it can be remembered and shown through generation. Although i know that the beach volleyball pit will be removed because they just so happened to put that in the queens courtyard.
