Ideas for part of my story?

Maybe he's a killer and she's just the person to catch him. Or she has to save him because he's supposed to do something that will change history.

You could use some other types of myths/lore like maybe "the red string of fate". Basically, the legend claims that an invisible red string is tied to either the ankles (Chinese Lore) or pinky fingers (Japanese Lore) of two people that are destined to meet or help each other in a certain way. You can alter this myth in a way so that the characters are attached mentally, therefore explaining why he appears in her dreams. Also, you can use the myth in a way that it can be a romance, or even just a strong friendship. Hope I helped.

He could be her "instincts".

Like he could be trying to foretell her something, and she doesn't understand it.

For example; let's say she has a dream where she is tied up,

and is in some place that resembles to a closest (or whatever).

She sees someone open the door and it's that guy.

Now there's to ways you could go with this idea.

Could he be the one who tied her up? Maybe.

Could he be there to free here? Possibly.

So maybe he is trying to hint to her the future.

It could go either way.

Maybe, he is a ghost of a person that killed one of her relatives, or the relative that got killed, or something like that. Even though yo said time travel is too cliche, you could still do it, but with a twists that wasn't done before.
