What is the difference between "truth" and "truism"?

Sometimes people say, "It is a truism that...". Aren't they better off saying "It's a truth that...", or better still, "It's true that..."?

The words mean utterly different things. A "truism" is a tautology. "Truth" means something completely different. It's really a shame that you are so stupid that you don't know what a dictionary is, child.

Truism has the negative connotation of being a trite or meaningless statement.
