Can someone please explain to me the basic rules of show jumping?
I know it varys, and that knocking down a rail is like 4 faults or something like that..but I tried going on wikipedia and I didn't understand..is there a difference between faults/penalties? And how are your penalties added on to your time (if they are)? How do you get your score? What's better, a larger score or a smaller score? Is your score your time? I just don't get it...any help would really be appreciated.
*varies, like I know that each place has different rules and what not.

You want the lowest score in the fastest time.
A pole down: 4 faults
1st refusal: 4 faults
2nd refusal: elimination
Usually there's a time limit. Like in the Olympics it was 83 secs. For each second after that you get 1 fault.
As far as I know, faults and penalties are the same.

The rules changed a few years back with regards to refusals and quite a few of the answers are based on the old rulebook. The new rulebook is
pole down = 4 faults
1st refusal = 4 faults
2nd refusal = elimination
If you cross your tracks going to the jump by turning a circle (for example if you forget your course) then it counts as a refusal.
