Okay I heard of the saying "Life or death/ Life and death situation". What I want to know, which is the real one. 'Life or Death' or 'Life and Death'

It's "Life or death." Try using it in a sentence: "As time ran out, the problem quickly worsened, becoming a life or death situation..." Basically, their actions could either mean life- survival, or death, for whomever is involved in the situation.

That doesn't make sense because you have no choice, you go through both whether you like it or not.
