Boarding school is fun. Generally, if you attend as a boarder and not a day student, you get the full measure of residential life. Keep in mind, the homesickness and whatnot is always the worst your first year, but after your first, living at a boarding school is a lot of fun.
I went to The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey, and I had a great time there. The people were nice, the students were stimulating, and I made some great friends - friendships that will last probably my entire life.
The work is intense, and you really need to learn how to manage your own time well. That is your #1 priority at a boarding school. Time management. If you're attending a pretty prestigious one like L'ville or Andover or Exeter, there's gonna be a huge network of people there to help you with time management, your workload and other issues. Eventually you learn how to manage your own time well, and it does serve you well in the future.
An advantage to going to boarding school is that (at least for top schools like Lawrenceville, Andover, Exeter etc) is that these schools have a relationship with top universities, and are well known for turning out good students. This will be to your advantage when it comes time to apply for universities.
Granted, some schools give you more freedom than others. If you're going to a top boarding school in the US like those mentioned above, you'll actually have a surprising amount of time to yourself - granted, you'll probably want to spend this time on extra-curricular activities and sports.
Honestly, while going to a boarding school can be a lot of fun, and is a great experience no matter what, its definitely not for everyone. I would suggest that you try and solve some issues with your homesickness before you go(eg. set up a skype schedule with your parents) but dont keep yourself closed off from life at school.
Keep in mind: You need to immerse yourself in the culture of the school, in the people there and the life you will build at the school to have a good time, and to truly make the most out of it.
Good luck!
