Why are Catholics so angered by a simple enumeration of their church's many atrocities?
Doesn't that seem to be misplaced emotion?
@ CapFab: malarkey, I never implied only.
Asking why swedes are tall does not imply all other nationalities are short.
And Catholics ARE christian.
@WANDERING: are you denying the entire list? decades of abuse in mulitple countries? are you saying the links I provided were lies? had you even heard of the Magdeline Laundries? of the hundreds of thousands of babies stolen in spain?
I notice you put atrocities in quotes. do you not find these things reprehensible?

Of course, but individuals and organizations with grandiose delusions of power think it is perfectly normal to abuse and then threaten their victims, and feign indignation for daring to point out the abuse. Abusive parents commonly demand that their children keep the abuse a secret. Some are so manipulative - they say it like - nobody talks about personal family issues. Everyone has issues but no one talks about it. Don't make a fool of yourself. If you embarrass the family, then I'll... (some sort of abuse).
Catholics are deluded and the priests keep the delusion going. Would a corporation risk losing business/dollars? Of course not, and neither do 'spiritual' leaders. No one voluntarily gives up money and power, even if they take a vow of poverty (but have loads of money), or take a vow of celibacy and then can't explain the child sexual abuse or how so many priests are coming down with AIDS. xtianity and islam are hypocrisies led by the power hungry. Power hungry people are charlatans who sometimes believe their own delusions of grandeur.

Because it happened 500 years before any of us existed. So you are blaming people in the Church, from the Pope down to us, who couldn't have had anything to do with it.
It's blaming me, or even my family--one side of which is not Catholic by the way--for slavery. I had nothing to do with it, no one alive has ever suffered from it, and my families were not here when it happened--and were too poor to own any. I had nothing to do with the atrocities even today's Pope had nothing to do with them. Moreover, they haven't happened for hundreds of years.
Further, Islam, for instance, continues to commit atrocities and you don't seem to have a problem with that. You forget that Protestants, during the Reformation, committed atrocities against Catholics, but that seems OK with you too.
Yes, I do find those things reprehensible but, then, I find many things that happened 500 years ago reprehensible. I'm glad these sorts of things, either by Catholics or Protestants haven't happened for hundreds of years, much like I'm glad the legal systematic enslavement of people doesn't happen either. I won't use what happened by misguided or evil people 500 years ago as an excuse not to follow the Christian religion founded by Jesus.

Catholics are not angered by others recognising the evil perpetrated by individuals who are Catholics. We know that even people claiming to be Catholic are sinners and sometimes perpetrate horrible evil. It is a proper reaction to use the fact that there are sinners in the Church to attack the Church itself whose moral teaching is the opposite of what these sinners commit.
Of course these atacks reflect more on the unreasonable hatred of the person making the accusations than it does the Church. I think that the more probable emotional reacion would be out of pity rather than anger that the person making these accusations is so shallow in thought to not recognise that sins are committed by individuals and when they are members of the Church they do so against the teaching of the Church.
A good example is that Catholic Christians do not usually "enumerate" the great errors of the Protestants like Calvin being called the butcher of Geneva for the evil atrocities that he committed. Zwingli forming armies to murder defenseless Catholic Christians. The English murdering Catholic Christians and making the one's that lived vilified. then there was the 30 years war that slaughtered Catholics. You are aware of course, that child sexual abuse is much more common among Protestants. As Jesus said, "he who is without sin throw the first stone". God bless!

Not clear what Catholics you've spoken to.
The church has changed significantly since Vatican II
and I find that those Catholics who follow Vatican II accept and are genuinely apologetic about the errors of the earlier times --
but they can justifiably get defensive if you focus on the earlier errors without the modern fixes.
-------------------
EDIT -
It may also be worth noting that the atrocities perpetrated at the behest of local priests were often considered atrocities by the leaders of the church -- even in that time.
For example - the Pope formaly rejected "the blood libel" as fraud and declared anyone teaching it to be a heretic round about the 15th century.
or - regarding the Crusader Massacre at Meinz - in an effort to rescue the Jews, the Bishop of Meinz gave them his fortified palace.

I could have got to say your filled with BS. This is not even a query it is a rant. a million. The Inquisitions had been prompted given that of the black plague that ravaged Europe, the persons became to the Church given that in the course of this time there used to be no clinical technological know-how to be had to manage this epidemic. The plague triggered famine and in flip the persons who became to the Church had supported the Church with the perception that the plague used to be a punishment from God given that in their sins. In which case something viewed as sinful used to be against the law, a few of which like heresy used to be punishable by means of dying. The truth isn't that many had died from the Inquisitions themselves, such a lot persons had died from the wars and the black plague. And the Jews had been pressured to go away Europe given that they had been viewed the intent of the plague for now not believing Jesus is God. Those that didn't go away had been field to lynch mobs. two. The Crusades had been a counter degree to the Muslims, previous earlier than the Crusades the Muslims had attacked Europe so there used to be already animosity among now not simplest those religions but in addition from the European kingdoms. And the Western Church obtained worried given that the Eastern Church asked our help given that Muslim bandits had been attacking Christian pilgrims within the Holy Land. three. The media has over rated this your claims are fake, there have been by no means that many to start with, and simply as you mentioned many had been scandals with out supported truth. The media for political factors had attacked the Church, and by means of doing so had additionally attacked Christianity. four. That's Ireland, now not the complete Catholic Church. The Church of England had performed additionally terrible matters in the direction of the Catholics, however you by no means listen something approximately that do you? five. The Catholic Church by no means banned contraceptives, contraceptives cross in opposition to Church teachings however the Church itself by no means instructed any person that they aren't allowed to make use of contraceptives. Your forgetting the Catholic Church is a Church now not a central authority in Africa. The thing more is Jesus taught approximately chastity and marriage, He by no means taught approximately having intercourse external of marriage or making use of contraceptives which could be viewed as unnatural. 6. The Catholic Church by no means adverse equal intercourse rights, the Catholic Church helps human rights however as I mentioned earlier than the Catholic Church follows the lessons of Jesus, His Apostles, and their sucessors so certainly not can the Catholic Church help some thing which matches in opposition to the lessons of Jesus, His Apostles, and their sucessors. Marriage is among a person and a girl, the Catholic Church by no means identified it being among a person and a person, or a girl and a girl.

Most of the stories are untrue or manipulation of the facts.
I am sure you are aware that Parents used to send their unwed pregnant children to convents to give birth and to give up their children for adoption. They were forced by their parents not the Church.
I am sure you are fully versed in Spanish Law from the 1950's as well right, so you couldnt possibly be posting something like this in complete ignorance could you?
You are aware that the Jews of WWII actually praised the Pope for his help of saving hundreds of thousands of Jews, even hiding them in the Vatican and his personal residence?
I am sure you are a qualified historian and know all the facts and not just what people want simple minds to believe, right?
I would address the rest but Ill let you take your butt out of your hands since you just had it handed to you.
"There are not more than 100 people in the world who truly hate the Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they perceive to be the Catholic Church. ....As a matter of fact, if we Catholics believed all of the untruths and lies which were said against the Church, we probably would hate the Church a thousand times more than they do."

The same reason Atheists would be angered by a simple enumeration of Soviet atrocities (far worse, might I add).
It is ridiculous to try and attack Catholicism because of the atrocities of Catholic leaders in the past, just as ridiculous as attacking Atheism because of the atrocities of State Atheism in the previous century.
Edit: The baby trafficking thing really bothers me. People are always going on about how it was some sort of Catholic Church thing, it wasn't, it was a societal thing participated in by nuns and priests as well as secular nurses, doctors, and law enforcers.

I suspect its because you aren't showing the atrocities of any other religion along with them. and why the hell are you blaming the catholics today for what was done centuries ago. that is like muslims constantly bringing up the crusades for a reason to murder and torture today. I dare you to show what has gone on in the pentecostal and southern baptist churches for the past 100 years!

Outside of some pedophiles, the entire Church is not necessarily bad, but criticism implies that it is and so some Catholics get angry. Understandable.
- KabooseLv 69 years ago
Oh my such accusations, the only atrocities was a long time ago with the crusades and such, and yes that was wrong, of course you forgot all the good things they have done in helping the poor and starving as well as spreading God's word across the world.
