The Woolworth ferry only runs one boat on Saturdays, so if you just miss a ferry or there is a queue then it's about 20 min wait for the next one. The amount of traffic waiting to use the ferry depends on how well other river crossing, in particular the nearby Blackwall Tunnel. If there is long delays and/or closure to the Southbound Blackwall Tunnel, traffic will divert to the Woolwich ferry as it's the nearest river crossing to the Woolwich ferry and for this reason I would avoid the Woolwich ferry. Equally I would avoid the M25 Dartford Crossing (QE2 Bridge) as long queues can build up there as traffic grinds to a hault to pay the toll.

Your best bet would be to follow the M25 clockwise round towards the Dartford cross and take the Southbound M11 heading towards London NE (j27). Just before J4 the M11 will go down to 2 lanes, keep in the right hand lane to take the slip road for the southbound A404 North Circluar Road. The take the first slip road sign posted A12 down to the Redbridge roundaboud and take the 4th exit sign posted A12 london and the Blackwall Tunnel. Keep right and keep following the A12 towards the Blackwall Tunnel. Once you have gone through the Blackwall Tunnel take the second slip road sign posted A206 Woolwich. Take the first exit at the roundabound and just follow this road towards woolwich.

You should not have a problem with the Woolwich Ferry on a Saturday unless there is limited visibility due to mist or fog. The operators are always very quick to suspend the service at the least sign of reduced visibility so tune in your car radio for the London traffic and weather reports.

The route to North Woolwich is to leave the M11 where it reaches the North Circular Road and continue on the North Circular Road in the Southbound or clockwise direction.

The best alternative route is to use the Blackwall Tunnel, which is usually fairly free-running on a Saturday. Stay on the M11 and follow the signs for the Blackwall Tunnel, A120. Once through the tunnel, leave the A120/M120 at the first exit slip and follow the signs to Woolwich. This is both more direct, quicker and being toll-free, cheaper than going via the QE 2 bridge.

The Woolwich ferry is reliable 90% of the time, but there are only 2 boats for a 2 boat service. No spares, so if one breaks down queues can occur

I agree with the above poster, head for the ferry and listen to traffic update to see which is clearer, the ferry or the tunnel. The QEII bridge charges, and Blackwall tunnel is usually clear, as long as its not rush hour.

M25 via QE2, definitely. the ferry is ok, I didn't wait too long for it.

From Camberwell to the Elephant & Castle?
