How fast can the amount of time someone can hold their breath decrease?

A friend says he free dove 50 feet in hawaii two years ago

he can't hold his breath past 30 seconds now

he doesn't smoke

is this plausible?

    You'r friend is probably telling tall stories by the sounds of it. 15mtr (50ft) is quite a long way down when you are diving.

    The amount of time a person can hold their breath depends on a lot of factors - its probably too broad of a question to give a good answer to you.

    Some things that affect the time you could hold your breath would be - heart rate, metabolic demand at the time you hold your breath (eg are you running at the time vs sitting), partial pressure of O2 and CO2 in the blood. And there are a LOT more....too many variables as I said to give a good answer.
