Does a strike for a raise of 5 cents/hour make any sense? What long-term benefits might a union gain?

At first I thought that it would make sense since the next time the management would consider the workers proposal to prevent another strike.

But, now I am thinking that a 5 cent raise per hour is not very much, and if they did go on strike they would not be gaining any wages, so they would be losing money in the long run. What do you think? Thanks!

From a strictly economic point of view, it depends on the length of the strike and the percentage of wages that the nickle represents. However there may be power issues and union politics involved. I never understood union mentality when it comes to some strikes. I was in management/supervision during a 6 month strike where they settled for almost exactly what was on the table when they walked and we shipped product during the entire 6 months.
