    Welcome to being human.

The previous poster gave you the general idea -- setting the mood, pacing the action, helping with emotional transitions, and often establishing themes for the various characters.

If you're worried about writing an essay, then search for "How To Write an Essay" in your browser. Pick one or two hits that seem to match your reading level and learning styles.

    The general idea is to

    (1) Do your basic research to get a feel for the area. In your case, this would be a search on "use of music in movies".

    (2) Pick 3-5 points to raise in your essay; these will form the body paragraphs.

    (3) Extract a general opinion you have on the topic. This forms your thesis (main idea).

    (4) Write a draft thesis statement and intro. The intro expands on the thesis, leading directly to those 3-5 main points. Also write a conclusion; this pretty much reiterates the thesis, but now in the context of having supported those points.

    (5) Do specific research on your main points. This is where you choose quotations, examples, etc.

    (6) Write the body.

    (7) Check your thesis, intro, and conclusion again (final draft).

If you want some easy targets, try one of the adventure films with John Williams music (Star Wars, Indiana Jones). Star Wars, for instance, has distinct themes for each of the major characters. Also, impending changes in action are foreshadowed by the music. For instance, even before Darth Vader speaks his first line, the music tells us he's a bad guy: military beat, minor key, highly percussive to underscore his heavy-handedness.

Pretty easy. Music in a movie sets the mood. Music can make us sad, scared, happy etc.
