I had an accident of my financed car back in May, however I don't have any GAP insurance and I am worried that the insurance company will write my car off. If I buy GAP insurance now will they cover me for my accident back in May? The insurance company are taking forever and a day to sort it out and they haven't even looked at the damage to my car yet, I have only sent pictures as I am awaiting liability from the third party.

Buying gap insurance after the fact is supposed to help you? Do explain.

Um, no, fire insurance on your home can't be bought after the fire starts, life insurance can't be bought after you are dead, and car insurance, including GAP insurance, can't be bought after the accident that writes off a car.

Get insurance quotes

No type of insurance covers anything that already happened before you bought that insurance.

(The only exceptions are "COBRA", which is a type of health insurance, and "title insurance", which is for houses whose ownership is disputed.)

You cannot purchase insurance coverage for an incident that happened in the past. You snooze, you lose.
