The other is the sense strand (also known as the coding strand, the nontemplate strand, and probably a few other terms. Scientists can be retarded. Oh yeah, I'm using the Wikipedia definitions for these things. I've seen all these terms used both ways. Did I mention scientists can be retarded?)

DNA is double-stranded for stability and strength and so it can be "handled" without getting all tangled. It also provides a measure of error detection -- a base pair mismatch can be detected, and appropriate measures taken by removing the offending section and replacing it with the complement to the "good" strand.
