Which Christians believe there will be a "new earth" (2 Peter 3:13)?

I recently asked a question about this verse and for help understanding what it means...I received a reply from a Christian saying "After the Lord's Second Coming our Earth will be transformed back into what it was before man sinned. There will be perfect balance and harmony in nature. No more bad weather or mosquitoes or predatory animals. Just peace. God won't completely destroy earth and create a new one. We know this because there will be survivors to the coming Tribulation judgements. These people will enter the new Earth in their natural states to repopulate earth."

Who else agrees with this? Why will the earth be made new? I thought all Christians believed we will go to heaven?

Out of all the thousands of Christian denominations, I don't think you would find even one that disagreed with 2 Peter 3:13, but you missed out an important part of that passage.

It says, "The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire and the earth and everything in it will be laid vare... That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness."

The new earth goes hand in glove with the new heaven. Of course, many who claim to believe in 2 Peter 3:13 refuse to believe the literal fulfillment of the previous bit I quoted! There isn't even going to be a literal new earth - it will be the same planet but just a changed system.

The literal destruction of the old earth and the old heaven is further explained in 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18 & 2 Thess 1:7. Righteousness will dwell in the replacement ones. All Christians believe this, but there are differing interpretations about when and how. Heaven is certainly the place where Jesus has returned to, to prepare a place for Christians so that they can be with him, but at a future point the new earth will no doubt be of particular interest to those with Christ in heaven. Who knows what will happen then? It will be wonderful, whatever it turns out to be!

This earth will be recreated not at the second coming but a thousand years after it.

That would be the 'third coming' with all the saints, the city of New Jerusalem coming down to rest on the Mount of Olives, all the wicked dead raised to life for a final war called between good and evil, and the destruction of devil and his angels along with the wicked, followed by the recreation of this earth (Revelation 20-22).

The Bible does in fact teach that there will be a new earth, but we are not told what it will be like other than that righteousness will dwell there and there will be no sea. We are not told who will live there or for how long, and we are not told that some will go to Heaven and some will stay on the new earth. The reply you received is nothing more than a load of pure speculation. If it's not in The Bible then there is no way to know such things, and no reason to believe them.

Jehovah's Witnesses believe that after the battle of Armageddon, when all the wicked will be destroyed, the survivors will get the opportunity to live forever on a paradise earth. The dead will be resurrected and they too, will get a second chance to prove themselves worthy of being declared righteous during the millennial reign of Christ Jesus. Planet Earth will be transformed into a paradise and there will be no death, no pain, no suffering and no tears. They believe this planet will never be destroyed.

Christadelphians believe that when Jesus returns, he will raise his "sleeping" followers from death and grant immortality to the faithful who have tried to live by God's precepts. His followers will help him to rule, bringing justice, righteousness and peace to the whole world - the Kingdom of God.

Seventh Day Adventists believe that the righteous will live in Heaven with Christ for one thousand years then Jesus Christ will return to the earth a third time to resurrect the unrighteous dead. At this third coming the Holy City, New Jerusalem, will descend to the earth with all of the righteous inside of it.

The Bible tells us that this present Earth and the present heavens will disappear and God will create a new heaven and a new earth. That is what Christians believe.

P.S. I was brought up from birth as a Jehovah's Witness but left that organisation in the 1970's. What I have said about their beliefs concerning paradise earth is accurate. If I have misrepresented either Jehovah's Witnesses, Christadelphians or Seventh Day Adventists, I will apologise.

Check out the links on what Seventh Day Adventists and Christadelphians believe about the earth. As for the beliefs of Jehovah's Witnesses, my information comes from pages 27 to 36 in their book "What Does The Bible Really Teach?" and nowhere does it say they believe this Earth will ever be destroyed. On the contrary, they believe the righteous will reside forever upon the Earth.

The righteous themselves will possess the earth,

And they will reside forever upon it.

    Psalms 37:29

Jehovah's Witnesses believe what the scriptures teach. We don't know exactly how life will be after armageddon but it will not reflect what we have now. Death will be done away with, peace will be abundant and the dead will be resurrected for a chance to live life, again. The Kingdom of God will reign and man will never again be given the chance to rule and ruin.

It sounds like one of the Jehovah Witnesses answered your question. 2 Peter 3:13 does bring out that there will be a new heaven and a new earth. There will be 144,000 going to heaven. Men and women faithful to Jehovah God around the world will go to heaven. (Revelation 7:9)

" And I heard the number of those who were sealed, a hundred and forty-four thousand, sealed out of every tribe of the sons of Israel."-Revelation 7:4

Not everyone on earth will go to heaven as soon as they die. Jehovah God will allow only those that have devoted their life to Him in worshiping Him the right way. Applying what the Bible says to their lives. Jehovah God doesn't allow just anyone in heaven. The Bible reveals that when He had Satan and his wicked angels hurled down to the earth. (Revelation 12:9) We were all born sinners, everyone will not worship God the way He directs us in the Bible nor will everyone heart conditions be right. Jehovah God can read the hearts.

The earth will be made new meaning that everything we experience now that pains, suffering and death will be gone.

"And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”-Revelation 21:4

There will come a time where as humans we will not have to experience suffering anymore. In the beginning Jehovah God had purposed for mankind to live in peace, being perfect both in mind and body. God still has the same purpose for us today. He will restore the earth back to the way it was, a beautiful paradise. Jehovah will also make us perfect in both mind and body as well.

As for the dead, they will be resurrected by Jesus Christ. (John 5:28, 29; Acts 24:15) Jehovah God is giving all those a chance to repent from their sins and turn Him. He is being patient with us because He desires no one to be destroyed.

" Jehovah is not slow respecting his promise, as some people consider slowness, but he is patient with YOU because he does not desire any to be destroyed but desires all to attain to repentance."-2 Peter 3:9

The Lord will have to purge the earth because of sin as well as all the devestation that will come upon the earth during the tribulation period. Thermonuclear war, fallout, disease, the plagues that God will send upon the earth will all devestate the planet. It will have to be purged of all of that, then renewed. Afer the 1,000 year reign of Jesus Christ, it will have to be purged and renewed one last time due to satan and man's rebellion (Revelation 20 & 21).

The “new earth” refers to the new earthly society of humans who will have demonstrated their willing submission to God’s Kingdom. The spiritual paradise that God’s people enjoy even now will at last be in its rightful setting in that beautiful “inhabited earth to come.” (Heb. 2:5) How can we be a part of that new system of things?

This is telling us yes not all will be going to heaven just 144000 Rev 7:4 but the earth will be rid of all the wicked people and just the righteous will dwell and paradise conditions will be restored to the earth as in the beginning of the Garden of Eden.

All the elements on this earth and heavens we live on will all be burned up. God will purify it from all the sin and things man and satan has done to it.
