Questions about American getting married to Canadian and moving to Canada...?
My boyfriend and I met online 5 years ago. We have made several trips to see each other over the past 5 years and decided it's time to be together for good, not visiting each other. The only way we can do this is to get married, otherwise he's not allowed in the United States for long periods of time, and I'm not allowed in Canada for long periods of time. This is our only reason to get married, so we can actually be together.
We saw an immigration lawyer that told us, we can get married and I'd get Canadian citizenship. The only problem, we have to prove our marriage is legitimate. This is rediculous, considering we don't want to get married in the first place, we just want to be together. So how spectacular of a wedding must we have? Does anyone have any experience marrying a Canadian, or marrying an American? Thanks for any help.

If a lawyer said that marrying a Canadian would give you Canadian citizenship... you should fire your lawyer, ask for your money back, and get another lawyer. Marrying a Canadian does give you citizenship.
If you marry a Canadian that person may sponsor you for permanent residency. The must be living in Canada, have a steady job history, residence, and a minimum of $13,000 in savings. CIC may assess a higher amount of depending upon their living situations, expenses, your employability, etc. The sponsor must also sign an agreement with CIC agreeing to cover all your debts and to accept any form of public assistance for three years -- whether you remain married or not. You would need to undergo background checks and medical exams. You will also need proof of the marriage, CIC may investigate it, and you may be required to attend interviews. For an American, the process averages around 15 months.
You don't actually need to be married in Canada. Canada accepts common-law partnerships. However, yu need proof that you have been living together for more than six months (joint income tax, bills, etc.) CIC tends to investigate these a lot more carefully.
Once you have permanent residency, you may live, student, or work in Canada -- provided you are not convicted on any serious crime in Canada. If you remain in Canada for three years, you may then apply for citizenship.
Obtaining a US green card for a Canadian has similar procedures. Merely getting married does not shorten or bypass any of the requirements.
You don't need any big or fancy wedding. $75 or so will get you a marriage license in most provinces or states and a $100 or so will get you a marriage commissioner. Any other expenses -- rings, wedding dresses, halls, dinners, cakes, etc. are up to you.

Identical intercourse marriages are legal in Canada, I perform them always. When you're up right here travelling and getting your marriage license ask the individual at the workplace of crucial statistics or at any place you get your bureaucracy to factor you within the proper direction for immigration. You have to select up your bureaucracy 24hrs before the ceremony in Yukon and if you happen to relatively love each and every different don't forget that is the start of your existence together do not simply go and signal the papers. Make a ceremony or event out of it. Its the major day of your existence. In case you do not consider that don't do it.

Agreed 100% with bw022! He took the words right out of my mouth. Instead of getting married right away (something it sounds like you don't want to do and it won't earn you automatic citizenship) why don'y you try to get a temporary work visa or international student visa in Canada. You can spend time with your significant other without having to get married and see if you can actually see yourself living in Canada for the rest of your forseable future.
