How to get rid of refrigerator odor?

I was away from home for more than two weeks this summer and when I came back home, there was a fruit fly infestation. I think there might have been a power out and the fridge stopped working. The fridge is fixed now and clean out with bleach/disinfected, but there is still some lingering rotten odor that won't go away even after I cleaned behind and underneath the fridge.

Washing it out with vinegar and water will kill the odor.

Many good suggestion are collected here.

If neither of them works, then there might be something wrong behind the heatproof sheet within the cabinet, get it checked.

You can try placing an uncooked onion cut in to small pieces, for a day.

By the way, are you sure nothing out of the stuff is producing odor?

Wadded up newspaper absorbs odors. I'd sprinkle it with baking soda just to fight the stink with another weapon!

Put a small bowl of ground coffee in there. It will mask, neutralize and absorb odors.
