Looking for ball park figure of price to fix power steering gasket before talking to mechanic?

I'm a little tiny woman and most mechanics ask to "talk to my husband". Sadly my regular guy is out of town on vacation for another while so I am trying to protect myself from someone else who'd like to rip me off.

My power steering fluid is leaking like crazy, I'm not sure ALL the terms but here goes, but here goes: where the power steering gear box is leaking from where it connects to the steering column, or at least the upper assembly. I've cleaned the whole thing and waited a few seconds and drip drip drip from that joint so I'm assuming its a gasket.

Can the joint be resealed or does the whole gear box need to be replaced?

Is this a $100 job or a $1000 job?

Any input is appreciated.

Update:

It makes a whiny and squealing when the power steering fluid is all but leaked out, when I put more in it is nice and quite again... so I'm hoping the damage isn't TOO bad.

It should a $100-ish job but repair shops love to sell you parts (like a new pump) and the gasket with it. Who knows, they might be right but then it will cost you closer to $500. You can try to replace the seal (if you know how) but usually if the steering box is bad it makes some god-awful noises.
