Buddhist and way to smart for my own good. Sometimes I like Y!A to make me think or find other people way to smart for their own good, other times I go "urgh, how do some people even have the brains to BREATHE!?" However, I'm always open to learning about the ideas and beliefs of others.

  • Looking for ball park figure of price to fix power steering gasket before talking to mechanic?

I'm a little tiny woman and most mechanics ask to "talk to my husband". Sadly my regular guy is out of town on vacation for another while so I am trying to protect myself from someone else who'd like to rip me off.

My power steering fluid is leaking like crazy, I'm not sure ALL the terms but here goes, but here goes: where the power steering gear box is leaking from where it connects to the steering column, or at least the upper assembly. I've cleaned the whole thing and waited a few seconds and drip drip drip from that joint so I'm assuming its a gasket.

Can the joint be resealed or does the whole gear box need to be replaced?

    Is this a $100 job or a $1000 job?

    Any input is appreciated.

  • My friend just had a crazy blitz relationship with an "abuse"victim, what is your opinion?

Ok, this is a situation where the girl, Jane, whom he met online I fully believe has suffered long term physical and sexual abuse throughout most of her childhood. I'm doubtful of what she's saying now.

She met my friend, ****, on a Wednesday. Jumped in a car and left town with him on Thursday. Friday morning driving back into town she confessed to him that she didn't want to return home because she is 22 and lives with her brother who regularly beats her and she has no where to go and no friends. Saturday they moved in together. He drove by her house, picked up a bag of stuff and jumped in his car and moved in with him. On the Sunday he wanted her gone because he realised the whole thing was retarded and she wouldn't leave. On the Monday she was still there and he called a shelter to ask if he could bring her somewhere and got an address of where to drop her. She freaked out on him and dialed one friend and got dropped at her friends house. The next morning she went back to her brother's house.

He still wants to help her when she calls and says "I need to get out of my house, can you come pick me up?" He thinks it would be to hard for her to leave the situation because its hard for abuse victims to leave.

I'm telling him she's 22, he's her brother and she has no reason to actually stay there. He's not controlling her because in the 5 days she was with him he didn't contact her or prevent her from leaving when she returned home to pick up a bag.

She freely told someone she knew for about 72 hours her whole sob story, asked for help and moved in with him. She can tell other strangers the same thing and ask for help form people who can actually help her. She claimed she had no where to go but when push came to shove dialed one person and immediately went there for the night.

He thinks I'm being cold and heartless and blaming her for her abuse when I say she can pretty easily leave if she wants too. I'm telling him he's a giant sucker for a liar and I'm sickened that this girl would play such a card to try to get close to a guy.

    What is YOUR opinion?

  • Sex and foul vaginal smell? Yay or nay?

I've just had a miscarriage and finished bleeding in the past couple of days. Discharge is now normal looking and no other symptoms but I still have a faint foul odour. I was trying to look up what might cause it or what I might do to fix it and my boyfriend asked what I was doing as I was trying to smell it. I told him "it doesn't smell like fish or urine... I don't know? Old blood? Death?" Now he wants to leave and not have sex at all. He's looking for the opinion of the Y!A community if he's right or not.

  • Why am I so stupid? How was I easily blinded by someone I thought loved me?

My ex common law husband moved out in January and it was an ugly blow out but we were able to get along since. We got back together three weeks ago, he was being everything I wanted, I canceled a date with another person for my birthday and went out with him instead, we've been having crazy passionate sex, he's let our children see us hugging, kissing and cuddling (they're 3 and 18 months). My three year old son has had a STRONG positive reaction to seeing us together. Yesterday he asked me to go to a family function with him for Easter, so we could all be a family together and I could meet some of his cousins I had not yet met (they're not a close family). Today he came over to see the boys, hesitantly told me he'd gone on a date earlier today, I said "well I'm nothing to you and you can date other people if you want, I just want to put my effort into this so I don't want to myself" he said "you're not nothing, you're very important but this just came up but I felt bad." He said this to me in the bathroom while I was peeing. He asked me for a hug and said he regretted he couldn't stay later for some fooling around and cuddling. I discovered on FACEBOOK a couple of hours later he has a girlfriend, as of today... about an hour before our conversation. I actually went to his house to ask him and he denied lying to me... of course he did, she was in his bed! I'm normally an intelligent strong woman, how could I be so deceived, hook line and sinker by him? What makes people so blind when they think they're in love? I was told not to fall for him that he just wanted me back because he knew I was interested in someone else but I didn't listen. How does great desire make fools of people so easily?

  • Is there ANY car which is more aerodynamic in reverse?

Watching Mythbusters on this topic and they're only testing one model but I've heard this about other cars. Is there any model of car actually known to be more aerodynamic in reverse than forward?

  • Trying to identify an envelope paper nest building wasp?

Last week I moved a cinder block in my yard that had tall grass growing around it. Out popped two black and white wasps. I jumped back but my husband put his hand right by them and they did nothing. They were bigger than yellow jackets and looked similar to bold faced wasps. There were only two of them and the nest was an enveloped paper nest about 3/4 size of a tennis ball attached in the cinder block hole. I moved the blocked to the same orientation a bit away from where it was and they went back in it.

Most of the yard is over run with field ants but there are NONE around where these wasps are.

I'm trying to find out what they are, I've looked it up and most paper wasps seem to have exposed "honey comb" nests and this was definitely enclosed and they showed no aggression.

If they really keep ants away how do I encourage more to nest around my house?

Any ideas what they might be? Oh yes, I live in Calgary, Alberta.

  • Multiple ant hills with dead grass, what do I do?

I have a problem with ants. There is so much information out there on various ants its hard to know what to do but I'd rather not call a professional yet if its a species that's easy enough to identify.

I live in Calgary, Alberta. My front lawn gets full sun in the morning and partial sun in the afternoon.

When I moved in in August the front "flower beds" were over grown weed and grass pits which had been previously covered with the black tarp material and red crushed stones. When I pulled it all up there was an ant hill on the end of each (there's two like this). I dug up much of the nest and poured boiling water down the big holes. I "boiled" the ones I saw running with eggs. I waited a day or two and saw no evidence of ants so I planted my flower beds and everything died... ants.

In the front yard there are 3 patches of dead grass; yellow and dry about 6"x6' which is not really piled into a hill but SWARMING with ants and holes everywhere. These patches are about 3 feet apart. If anything distrubes them they rapidly swarm with black ants (appear black, I haven't looked really closely) 1/2 cm - 1 cm big (different sizes). I assume these are the soliders as the regular ants I see in the yard are 1/2 cm and a bit smaller. So many swarm it looks like someone tossed a bag of peppercorns on there and is shaking them around. Some parts of the yellow grass blacks out. These ants bite when the dead grass area is disturbed.

Today I was mowing with the lawn mower set to the highest grass setting. I cut the top off an ant hill (I last mowed 3 weeks ago) and not only did they swarm the ground but me and the mower. The ground was very spongy with some grass starting to die when I looked closer. This site was about 10 feet from the other three but the ants looked the same, though about 3 feet from one of the flower beds.

Any idea of a) what kind of ants they might be? b) best way to kill them? I have small children who I'd like to be able to have play in the front yard and two dogs who go there rarely c) do you think all sites are connected underground?

The people who here before barely tended the yard and the thatch was so thick in the spring it was growing moss underneath. It been power raked twice but still has some thatch in the area around where most ants are, this could be contributing.

  • Is there a twilight zone on Mercury?

So Mercury rotates slower than it orbits the sun resulting in one side facing the sun for a LONG time. The bright side is blazing hot and the dark side is freezing. Somewhere on the side of the planet there has to be a twilight zone no? Now in that twilight zone would the temperature be comfortable?

Basically if there is a twilight zone is there a temperature gradient around the sides as well or does the lack of (or thin) atmosphere make the temperature go from hot to cold where the light touches and does not touch?

  • Just found out something terrible, do I send a facebook message?

I just found out that a guy who dated two of my cousin's and use to babysit my sister and I and take us out for ice cream was charged last week with possession of, making and distributing child pornography. I'm so shocked! He currently is a high school teacher and all reports are coming back that he was everyone's favourite teacher.

His younger brother was a friend of mine in high school and dated my sister. I haven't been in close contact but we chat about philosophy and politics on facebook. Currently he's on sabbatical in Ghana. If he was home I might write him a letter (snail mail) but probably not make a phone call.

To be clear the younger brother is on sabbatical, not the apparent pedophile.

I want to send him a message saying "so sorry to hear what's happening in your family and I hope you don't get treated as if you are your brother" or something along those lines. I haven't laid eyes on him in about 7 years. I just think its tacky to make such a message through facebook or email.

  • Something like a Norfolk Pine but about 4 feet tall?

I saw the prettiest little tree the other day in a hospital atrium, it looked like a Norfolk Pine but was about 4 feet tall. I don't know if they actually grown that big and if they do what do you need to do to get them that big and how long does it take (guestimate)?

Any ideas what this pretty tree is?

Also, what conditions would a Norfolk pine need to be left outside year round? Or is there another similar tree that fairs well in cold weather year round? I'm in Zone three in Calgary and a lot of plants here fail in the Chinooks with winter temps down to -25oC one week and up to +10oC the next in a chinook.

  • What is a tall but fairly cheap tall grass?

I'm trying to plan out the gardening around my new home and I know I want ornamental grasses to do xeroscaping (sp?) and I have a list of some I'd like to have and their basic sizes but I have no idea the cost. Some I know are going to be pricey like the Japanese Blood Grass.

I have a length of fence I'd like to put tall grass (or a tall plant, not clinging) in front of but its about 30 feet and I don't want to spend thousands of dollars on it.

I live in Calgary in Zone 3. According to www.hgtv.ca my gardening considerations are average frost free between May 28 and September 18.

If you know of a tall grass that's not to outrageously priced or another tall plant that will live in this zone without a full time watering that is fairly inexpensive I'd love to know.

    Thanks.

  • How much bleeding is normal from a surgery drainage site?

I called the local 24 hours nursing hotline and they're pretty useless, they ask questions for about 10 minutes then always say "well I can't tell you over the phone but go to a doctor if you're unsure."

My husband had a disc repair between L4 and L5 Thursday morning and for some reason the hospital sent him home yesterday morning. He was given some stuff to change the dressing and told to have it changed once a day.

Last night I changed it as it was freely bleeding out of the dressing and there was a blood pool on the back of his pants. The surgery incision doesn't look like it is bleeding but the drainage hole off to the side open and still freely bleeding. He was sent home in this condition.

Currently the dressing is bright red in an area about 2" x 2" but not pouring out yet.

The nurses didn't bother to talk to me about the dressing care although I'm the one taking care of it. Nor did they send written instructions. I really don't know how much bleeding is normal and when to be concerned. I don't want to run off to the hospital if this is actually normal. He's looped on oxycodon for pain and doesn't clearly remember what they said. I tried to call to the unit he was on and they say "call the surgeon", I called the surgeon who is not in his office today. Nursing hotline is no help. His discharge sheet says "call surgeon or return to hospital if there is drainage from incision" does that include bleeding from the drainage hole or just puss or plasma from the surgery site?

Please, if you know ANYTHING about this type of care please let me know. I have no experience of my own to draw upon for this.
