What's life really like in New Zealand for an immigrant?

I've been thinking about moving to New Zealand as a teacher - it's a country I've always wanted to move to eventually, and hopefully I'll soon have the qualifications to do it. As you'd expect everything you hear from the immigration service and the like is positive, and New Zealand has a reputation as being a nice place, but I'd heard a few stories now from British migrants who say there's a lot of racism - even some being told by companies that they'd 'never employ a pom' or getting abuse from the parents of the children they teach. What's the real New Zealand like, for people who move out there? I don't really want to spend all that effort moving abroad, if it's really as awful as some of these people say.

As a kiwi living in the UK as a teacher, my accent was picked on all the time, so I can sympathise with that....and that will probably happen in some cases. There was just a report done last week that showed that immigrants to NZ were happy they had moved here but some groups, particularly those from Asia and Africa who found intergration harder than those from Europe/Australia/USA/ South Africa.

I would say that there are less issues than in other countries. There are a lot of Brits over here so its not like its unusual but there is a bit of ribbing from some people about that from some people. Kids will hassle it no doubt, as happened to me!!!

My daughter, her husband and four younger boy's emmigrated to New Zealand in November 2005. They orginally settled at a small location known as Te Hora near Wellington however my daughter's husband located that the trip into Wellington to work everyday was precisely what they had been doing in this country ( it was taking about an hour to get residence every night ) so he nonetheless wasn't spending time with the children. He managed to at ease a position in Invercargill, they usually all moved there in 2006. They love it, contary to what you have got been informed through New Zealanders Invercargill is an up and coming place, first-class searching middle, lovely expanses of shorelines and i hear that the nightlife is good too ( not that that bothers me being a nana and all ) !! However there are some excellent places to devour. My daughter lives simply external Invercargill, about 5 miles, in a rural discipline, they've 5 acres and best a small loan, if that they had nonetheless been right here they would were in a cramped apartment with a small backyard, and 4 boy's driving them mad. As it's, the boys have all of the room on the earth to run around, they usually love there little school which is inside walking distance. We miss them terribly, however we've been in the market three occasions and whilst we're fit and healthy we will proceed to move out each year. I want you all of the luck on this planet, don't write off Invercargill, my loved ones is so glad there and the climate isn't that dangerous, more or less the identical as our's however perhaps alittle warmer in the summertime, despite the fact that the Kiwi's will tell you that Invercargill can have three distinctive weathers in one day!!! Excellent success anyplace you come to be.

The only way to know is to come visit for yourself. Just plan a short trip here for a week or so.

We have loads of Brits though, turn on the tv and you'll see about 1/5 police on our Police Ten Seven show are British, many kids I grew up with were British, people I've worked with were British etc, and they all fit in well.

Some people are racist, others are not. Considering the large number of immigrants we get every year, it can't be all that bad.

Racism and 'never employ a pom' are utter lies, you must have gotten NZ mixed up with australia as there is a lot of racisim in australia especially against blacks and asians. Dont worry many people outside of NZ can't tell the difference between NZ and australia so you're not the only one getting confused.

NZ is very welcoming to immigrants as we have tons of foreigners, there are lots of amazing scenary to explore, plenty of which is unseen of around the world. The Malborough sounds for example.

NZ has been the most safest country to live in for quite a few years now, occasionally dropping to third below Norway (or Denmark) and Iceland.
