I'm going on a date, and the main course is sushi, any tips?
Alright so my boyfriend and i are going to a sushi place for our 2 year anniversary. His mom will be taking us, as well as eating with us. I've never had sushi before, although I've always wanted to try it. I understand though that it is really different from many foods, and I consider myself a somewhat picky eater. I don't want to be rude (specially in front of his mom!) and not eat something because I don't like it. Is there any type of sushi that might be lighter on my taste buds? I like rice, and I understand that different types of sushi come with rice. I'm not sure how I feel about the whole raw fish thing, but could anyone give me some types of sushi that may taste similar to something more un-foreign? I don't want to have him pay for the food and then me end up not liking it. Thanks in advance~

I am also a very picky eater but I LOVE sushi. I didn't try it for years but one year I went with a friend for her birthday. We started with her ordering a couple of things and then I tried a piece and found what I really liked.
The most common form of sushi is a roll where the fish, veggies, cream cheese, etc is rolled in seaweed and rice. Rolls are cut into several pieces; about 8 pieces. There are many types of rolls with all manner of things inside them. Some have just veggies and some have cooked seafood in them.
All shellfish has to be cooked so if you order anything with shrimp or crab it will not be raw. I especially like rolls with tempura shrimp. If you like shrimp you'll like it.
So my suggestion is that you let your boyfriend and his mom order first and taste what they order even if it seems really weird. Just one bite isn't going to kill you and you never know what you might really like.
As far as raw fish goes I love, love, love salmon and tuna. I thought the texture might be weird but it's not at all. It;s just delicious!! Also, eel is awesome!! I have to try hard to not think about what it looks like alive and just enjoy how it tastes.
Oh oh and another yummy thing is tabiko. It's tiny orangy fish eggs that some rolls have on the outside of them. Soooooo good and not at all like caviar. Caviar is gross!
Someone else said to eat ginger so you don't get sick. Ginger will help you not get motion sick but that's all. You will get ginger, wasabi and soy sauce with your sushi. If you like ginger go ahead and have some on your sushi. I don't care for it myself. Wasabi is delicious but so hot that it will blow your head off if you eat to much. I put just a tiny, tiny bit on each bite. I mean a tiny bit. The best is to mix the wasabi and some soy sauce together and use a little of that. Really, just a little, like almost just a speck of it.
Damn, now I'm craving sushi and it's midnight. Damn!

Not all sushi has raw meat (called sashimi). Look for the kinds that have vegetables and don't be afraid to ask what is in something. Also, something else to watch out for is roe (raw fish eggs). I personally like vegetarian sushi because I'm not afraid of a raw vegetable! I've tried some with raw meat (tuna, salmon, and octopus) and one bite was more than enough for me. One thing I would recommend from my experience would be the California rolls. No raw meat and quite tasty, in my opinion.

Try California roll. Also, they may have combination dinners where your order contains different items, not just sushi. Consider ordering something like that so if you don't like sushi, you have other items/things to eat and try. Tell them you never had it before. Then they will know possibly you may not like it.

Well, I'd ask to go somewhere else since it is for your anniversary. Tell her that you've never had sushi and while you wouldn't mind trying it, you'd feel better if this anniversary you ate something you know you like. I'd never go to a place to eat something that was questionable to me, and I don't like to be rude but crap, sushi just is too much to push on people.

If your sketchy on the while raw fish thing, go with california rolls (or deep fried california rolls yum!) It's made with imitation crab and mostly everyone I know likes it. Also spider rolls (not real spider!) Is good it's made with soft shell crab. Stay away from spicy tuna rolls. You might like philadelphia rolls. It has raw salmon and cream cheese. So if you like cream cheese you might like it. Also just try veggie rolls, our sometimes they have "sushi" made with cooked chicken or beef, depending on where you go.
