What are the implications of refusing to get a Social Security number?
Suppose you don't want your new child to have a SSN.
According to the Social Security Administration, it is not mandatory:

Must my child have a Social Security number?
No. Getting a Social Security number for your newborn is voluntary. But, it is a good idea to get a number when your child is born. You can apply for a Social Security number for your baby when you apply for your baby’s birth certificate. The state agency that issues birth certificates will share your child’s information with us and we will mail the Social Security card to you.
If you wait to apply at a Social Security office, you must show us proof of your child’s U.S. citizenship, age and identity, as well as proof of your own identity. We must verify your child’s birth record, which can add up to 12 weeks to the time it takes to issue a card. To verify a birth certificate, Social Security will contact the office that issued it. We do this verification to prevent people from using fraudulent birth records to obtain Social Security numbers to establish false identities.
But what happens to the child once they become an adult?
Do they still have to pay FICA taxes?
Since government regulations, such as on banks, require a SSN be furnished...does that mean the child wouldn't be able to open a bank account?
What else?

Yes, you would have difficult opening an account without a social. Banks are required to report interest earned, they use socials to report that interest. Without a social you could not open an interest bearing account. (Difficult, but not impossible to open a non interest bearing account depending on that individual banks policies.) What else? Filing income tax without the child's social to claim them as your dependant could present difficulties. Getting them listed on your medical insurance. If you or your spouse were to die the child would need the social to get survivor benefits from social security. If your child ever wants to apply for a loan the credit bureau uses socials. Most hospitals use social in the patient check in process for insurance/idenity purposes. Driver's License applications use socials. I understand your reluctance, but it will be an uphill battle. Which ever way you go.....Good Luck.

Whether or not you get your child an SSN, at some point, it will be required. Employers are required to obtain a valid SSN from a new hire before the new hire can start working, so no SSN, no job. As you point out, banks require the SSN to open an account, so no SSN, no account.
Basically, all you are doing is delaying the inevitable.

The most obvious problem is that you won't be able to claim the child as a dependent or take any other tax credits for him on your tax return.
He won't be able to get a job at all without a SSN, so there's no worry about whether or not he'll have to pay FICA or any other taxes. (He also won't be able to attend college.)
And you are correct, he won't be able to open any kind of bank account.

The SS quantity is permanent; the SSA runs at about 97% efficiency (i.E., lower than three% of the money it takes in is used to run the agency) with Sixties desktops. Your process would require the general public agency to revamp its current process of monitoring credits and making payments ... No, the SS number procedure ain't broke, NOW, while you practice for credit or any of the opposite things they ask to your SSN, that you could decline to give it. Absolutely, banks need it so they are able to adequately report your personal loan curiosity and the interest you earn, however the division store does not want your SS#. That you would be able to agree to give them the final 4 digits, or that you would be able to agree to provide them any other type of identification, but SS# most effective belongs to you, the IRS and the SSA. Some matters are catching up: for instance, my wellness insurance card no longer uses my SS# for my coverage/contract quantity. Mailings from the IRS no longer show SS# on the outside, and of path, you will have to under no circumstances lift your SS card for your pockets as a matter of dependancy. (most effective elevate it to job interviews, then return it to a riskless location to your house or other comfy region.)
