I was just wondering why teenagers like random costumes. Is it because they don't want to look too dressed up or over the top?

They're trying to be unique and original. Dressing up as a movie character or serial killer like Jason or Michael Myers has been done a million times and is unoriginal.

Because this is their last time they get to dress up and act like kids before they go into the adult world. They want to make it memorable.
