    1. They learnt from the Iberians (Spanish & Portuguese) about Empire building and raising navies.

    2. Industrial revolution in Englnd (about 1750) generated hunger for raw materials to feed the factories to keep the employmnt full and also to seek markets for the finished goods that only meant exporting them. A captive Empire would fulfil the requirements to meet both ends, under absolutely ontrolled conditions.

    3. General interest of the populace to 'explore' the newly discovered lands. The resurgent British exploration quickly took off and Britons were to be found in the remotest corners and not only in the deep recesses of nearby Africa. Latin America was firmly in the Iberian domain & (informally) barred for others.

    4. The ongoing traditional trade (even at the pre-industrial level) needed to diversify. With the shipping routes open to the East Indies, avenues of engaging people in pursuits there went up. Navigation & shipping became big ecoomic factors and large scale employers.

The lower strata of the society was emerging as respectable middle-class demanding better avenues of employment, standards of living and opportunities to prosper. Britain being a small country in comparison to some, like Russia or even USA then, was painfully aware of its limitations.

Though there were Empires all through the history, it is the 'colonsation' of distant lands and subjugation of people there that was the new agenda before the governments of these new Imperialists. Imperialism got a (unlike the stale European resident Empires: Austro-Hungarian, German, Ottoman Turkish, Russian Czarist) new meaning with colonisation of overseas territories. Whole of Europe were competing with each other. In this competition, England (or rather Britain or UK) found itself in the fore-front.
