A/C Not Running when Idle?

I drive an older Subaru Legacy and lately, it's been very hot out, around 100 every day. In the mornings and late afternoons, the A/C runs fine, low idle or highway/freeway. On cooler days, it runs fine as well. However, during the middle of the day (when it's most needed) it seems only to run while the car is in a higher speed, such as freeway. Driving around town, stopping at lights and stop signs, it just blows hot air. I'd really like to get it fixed, but can't afford much right now. Any advice or help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Make sure you fans for the radiator/condenser are working correcting.

If you have two fans, one should come on whenever you put the AC on.

This sounds like an electric fan issue. With the car in park and the A/C set to max, both fans should be running. If not, that's your problem. If they are, then clean the condenser coil and radiator. But do NOT follow Robert's advice. A pressure washer can do serious damage to the fins on your radiator and condenser. Plus, spraying water on electrical components has a way of making them go up in smoke.

FIRST< try POWER WASHING THE ENGINE BAY with GUNK orange cleaner Use a DIY car wash and keep engien RUNNING! TFOCUS ont he space BEWTEEN the radiator and the A/C condenser (looks like a THIN radiator) This SPACE collects paper, debris sedlings leaves animal droppings and insect bodies. Air simply CANNOT get around this stuff and keep your REFRIGERANT in the proper temp range. If this does NOT help you will just HAVE to have your refrigerant recylced. They will COLLECT and FILTER your exisitng refrigerant, and add MORE to the system as required. Expect to pay aroung $75-100 for this servicing. WHAT YEAR is your car. If it is OLDER you may have to have it converter over to the NEW type of refrigerant. GOOD LUCK!!!

  • i agree with the two that made a comment about the fan around the radiator. that should be on any time that the ac is on. if that does not happen, the refrigerant will not loose the heat that it absorbed the first time through the evaporator. the issue can be as simple as a failed fan, a blown fuse or a failed relay. it can get complex after that though.
