It depends how much time you want to elapse.

There are two ways to do "time lapse".

    1) The camera - or camcorder - has an "interval timer" so a still image is captured every "x" seconds... you set the "x" in the camera's option menu. Sony calls it "Interval Recording" (INT. REC-STL in the camcorder's options menu). My HDR-HC1 has the feature. The HDR-HC1 is no longer made. The currently available pro-line sibling is the HVR-A1U. It has the interval feature, too.

    2) The camcorder records the activity to video. Import the video to a video editor and speed it up. This is not a camera feature, but a capability of the video editor. I captured 8 hours of video using a camera in the passenger seat of my car, driving from southern California to northern California. After editing, the video is about 7 minutes long.

Set a budget. Investigate the cameras and camcorders that are in your budget - download their manuals from the manufacturer's website. See if the feature you need is in the manual. If not, move on - if so, put it on the short list.

The historical Nikon D200 has a built-in interval timer and you will discover one for around $350 to $four hundred. The relaxation of your money, you should use to buy a lens. When you consider that the ending video can be at 1920 x 1080 pixels and uses most effective, the ten mp sensor is a lot big sufficient. The ancient D200 can also be an extraordinarily powerful camera and has seals to maintain out dirt and moisture you are going to ought to funds for a just right tripod considering you'll be taking pictures 1440 shots to furnish 1 minute of video at 24 fps (cine).

Nikon COOLPIX P510 16.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with 42x Zoom NIKKOR ED Glass Lens and GPS Record Location is unbelievable. The 42X zoom with the stabalizer is great. Still working through the features and enjoying very good photography. Discovering and experimenting with all this camera can do is nothing but pure fun. The only cons are the battery charging must be done with the battery in the camera. There are inexpensive chargers that can be peuchased seperatly. It's a little larger than I expected, but all is forgiven with all its capabilities.
