He probably said oh because he wasnt sure how to respond or was afraid that he would say the wrong thing. some people are kinda akward in situations dealing a lot with emotiions

No I wouldn't. Sometimes people don't know how to response to a sad event or story so instead of not saying anything at all, they say oh. It's not bad but how did you expect him to respond?

What kind of reaction are you looking for. What is suppose to cry with you? Now is his reaction to small or are you over reacting too this fine response?
