Why do many gay guys act like stereotypical gay guys?

Like Kurt from Glee, they're all flamboyant and camp, and very feminine. It's an awful stereotype for other gay guys who don't let their sexuality define them, and to be honest it shows a lack of originality.

Seriously though, why follow the rules of a stereotype? Is it just because it's the only version of gay people that the media promote?

    What crap.

For every camp gay guy there are 10 of us you would never know were gay. And if thats how they are comfortable so be it. Stop being so judgemental.

    Let me ask you this.

Why do all straight guys go out get drunk, get laid and vomit everywhere. Because they all do. Don't they?

That's not letting your sexulaity define those people are a minority the problem is if a person doesn't fit into a person's preconceived notion of what it means to be gay then they are incorrectly presumed to be straight.

My typical example is take a sports bar that might have 300 people in their to watch say a college football game. Of those 300 men approximately 15 to 30 of them were gay men. But only the two that were effeminate were assumed to be gay the other 29 slipped right by without people noticing it is hilarious because people say the most ridiculous things with no clue as whom they are saying them to.

Never take what the media shows you as an accurate representation of what people are like. YES, it shows lack of originality. There is very little on TV that has any originality at all.

TV is about selling product. TV is about creating stereotypes so people will not think for themselves, but will just buy what TV is selling.

I don`t know any gay guys who act like stereotypes. Some are a little gentler in manner than some het men, but some het men are about as mannerly as apes, so that isn`t exactly a negative.

It's not really that many gay guys. Some are effeminate, some aren't. Why should it matter? Just let people be who they are. Also, Kurt is definately feminine, but he's not that bad. There are guys who are much more effiminate than him. It's a just personality trait. Although, 'feme' gays do seem to appear on TV much more than others..

It's ridiculous. I have gay guy friends that watch sports, drink bear, don't talk with a lisp and nobody thinks they are gay!

And most of my girlfriends in highschool and colllege were effeminate with long hair, talked a lot about what to wear, nail painting and weren't "bulldykes" with male interests...

I dunno how the media came up with these stereotypes on gays & lesbians but I haven't seen them yet. Gay girl is almost never a girl trying to be a guy, and a gay guy is almost never a guy trying to be a girl!

that's not true , you took the example of kurt but from the very same show you can see that blaine ( the other gay character in the show ) is not that much feminine , he likes sports and he even started a fight club

I can't understand why they behave like that. Surely it defeats the object as I thought they would be attracted to masculinity. If they act girly then how would another gay man be attracted to that? They might as well have a female. I thought they would all want be as masculine as possible.
