This is a harmless garden orb weaver. Nothing 'God awful' at all.
If I could see the bottom, I may be able to tel the species, but is very similar to the shamrock orb weaver:(may well be one.)

it's a wonderful friend of the garden!!.... no danger.... very interesting to watch.... remember the kid's movie Charlotte's Web?... the spider wrote words in her web and the pig was saved from the butcher?.... this is the same kind of spider..... leave her alone.. she'll die when the cold weather comes... meantime, if her web is in your way, just use a long stick to gently take it down and she'll build a new one somewhere else....
there is a lot of Orb Weavers, in many different colors and body shapes.... a really interesting group of spiders.... please don't be afraid of them.... they're the good guys!!!
note the zigzap 'zippers' in the web centers?... cool huh?....
