why did the woman whose KIA went over 100 mph with stuck accelerator fail to put it in neutral or shut engine?

KIA goes 120 mph and the woman dials 911 for help. She says gas pedal is stuck. She goes 59 miles in 35 minutes and is about to kill people several times. After like 59 miles the car runs out of gas and stops on its own. Otherwise she would have gone on and on. Why are these people issued driver's license? Do they know that the N stands for neutral and its purpose is to disengage the car's motor? And she isn't even issued ticket. It should be license suspension at minimum. And now her husband says they will file lawsuit against KIA for making defective pedal. Stuck pedals are consequence of not getting throttle service done. It costs 60 dollars and is a preventative measure as part of maintenance. How is KIA at fault for this?

I don't know about tickets, but if you aren't smart enough to pull the car out of gear, you ought to have to go through a full on Drivers ed class before you are allowed to have a license again.I have actually had a stuck accelerator once,in a big rig.As you said,I simply pulled it out of gear and coasted to a stop,I see no reason this would not work in any vehicle.

To give you some concept on how stupid some people are though,I will pass on what one person from the past who had a similar problem told police. There was a driver last year on I-5 in california with a stuck accelerator, after going to very high speeds for a while he finally got it to come loose, apparently pulling it loose from a floor mat or something. What was funny was when the police told him that if it happened in the future he should try putting it in neutral,he actually asked if that could be harmful to the engine because it could rev too high. DOH!! He was going well over 100 mph,and he's worried about hurting his engine!!

I've no idea. My wife's Chrysler did a similar thing 3 months ago. Her car was fine. Then she went to enter the street, from a parking lot. The car suddenly roared at high rpm and lurched forward much too rapidly. Within a 1/2 block she had brought the car to a stop and got it shut of. According to her, she did not place the car in neutral. She just stamped on the ABS brakes and held the car straight. Once nearly stopped and in a safer turn lane? She smoked the brakes. Was able to hold control. She shut it off.

Once we got it towed home I found the car indeed did instantly race it's engine immediately on start up. Past 3000 rpm. The gas pedal was not at all stuck. The problem was a faulty Intake (Idle) Air Solenoid. Which had failed and jammed in the open position. Once the IAS was removed, seat area cleaned, and a new one placed in? The car once again ran perfect. There's no test to show an IAS is going out. It either works or not.

The KIA may not even have a stuck pedal. Recall they had to test and retest those other cars that went crazy on the drivers. Then they end up shrugging and blamed the floor mat. Tests otherwise inconclusive. Of course they will sue. The KIA broke her trust in the car. Such things are not suppose to happen. Incompetence and fear on her part will not matter. Today's drivers have little understanding of what makes a car tick. Most drivers don't even bother to check the car themselves. They just hop in and expect it to run proper. Even most basic checks are not done. Like battery connections. Today's cars are sold as effortless maintenance free no worry machines.

I think the lady simply panicked and let the car get away with her. Not everyone has the presence of mind to act even as my wife did. My wife would not even get back in the Chrysler as a passenger. Once I'd fixed it. She was shaking after the event and FEARED that car. I don't blame her.

So, I took her car to work the next day. To demonstrate it was once more safe. We did not sue Chrysler and I even now knew to check my Olds for the same part. Which, as it ends up, it does have. My short study up finds it is a modern substitute for some A/C on solenoids and idle air choke levers on cars.with carbs. Of course now computer controlled.

no putting it in nuetral from drive when the gas is pressed down can drop ur transmission or cause alot of harm to ur car as for shutiing it off can be bad to in some cars power steering will shut down too and u would ve able to steer. and when u get ur car maintenance most places dont go in side the car to do any thing its mostly under the hood/under the car they would never go by the gas pedal(ive been working at my uncle car place and thedont check pedals for tune up and only check the steering wheel if its older than 3 years other than checking the alignment) its kia falt because they let a falty product out (altho it happens some time it is there falt) wat she should have done is go to the shoulder put it in the highest manual gear on the car and slowly aply the brakes and when its fully dont slowly pull the e break if not dont right can cause whip lash but it should be the safest thing

If at 120 mph she could take out her phone and call 911 - she definitely can drive. However, I totally agree that all she needed to do was engage neutral, stop the car along the side of the road and switch off the engine. Maybe she panicked and carried on going - not sure as I was not there.

My only reasoning would be she was to scared to take a hand off the wheel.. but then she took her phone out and made a call..

I don't know, why do people who fall down water skiing fail to let go of the rope so often? It seems that people don't think clearly when they're panicking.

People are taught to drive they are not taught what to do or how to react in emergencies.
