Question about the 3.5mm TRS Jack?

Hi, I have a nice pair of headphones, and I have noticed that if the TRS plug is not all the way into the jack, the sound takes on a different characteristic. It almost sounds out of phase. Please could you tell me what I am hearing.

    Exactly that. The speakers are essentially in series, with one wired out of phase. You are hearing just the right audio signal, in the left ear, the opposite phase in the right ear.
