A mouse / hamster would do. A fish might be a little complicated since you have to deal with the water. A hamster would be easier to look after if you are deciding between a fish and a mouse / monster. :) But basically a small dog, or a kitten would be better in some way.

Hey, so if by traveling you mean car journey don't take a fish, they die easily from shock and other things, a mouse you'd have to change its cage everyday, they smell and arn't good companions..

Your best option is a dog, they are excellent companions, they're low maintenance just need toilet breaks, but go for an Older dog as it won't need to be toilet trained !! And they eat whatever Humans eat!

What do you mean by "long journey"? Pets aren't good with traveling, so I say no pet.

You cant travel with a fish. A dog is the best thing I can say.

A bird could be fun and you could get a travel cage, but a bit messy and expensive or rodent ie. hamster, mouse, guinea pig :)

    Try a rabbit

There are cuddly, in a way, like dogs and cats but much quieter and less hassle
