Does a dog die if he/she loses sense of smell?

I heard that it is easier for a dog to lose the sense of sight or hearing than to lose the ability to smell. Does a dog stop eating if they can't smell their food?

Nah. There are dogs who don't have their sense of smell. When the police are "testing" their dogs and they don't have a sense of smell they can't go on the field. But they defiantly will keep eating their food.

I believe strongly that the first sense a puppy has is his sense of smell. And similarly this is the last sense a dog has. By which time the dog is probably on his last legs.

The loss of scent will not come about by smacking a dog on the nose since the outside of the nose is not where the scent receptors are. You want to keep the dog away from cigarette smoke; and strong odors that can damage the scent receptors. Keep up on his regular dental check ups since dental infections can move to the nose and sinuses and cause the destruction of nasal cells. Read some of the good books on tracking and scent work that are out there and you will find more than enough info on the subject.

No. It is like if a human can't smell because of a permanent cold. You don't have to smell your food first do you? Niether do dogs. Some dogs prefer to smell their food first but they don't have to.
