How do I write an eulugy?

I have been asked to delivery the eulogy for a very close friend. I have never had to do this before and like some help. How do I start, what is appropriated to include. And how to end it. I like to keep it around 5 minutes or less.

I have been helping his wife plan the funeral. I contacted and arranged for the following.

He is former Special Forces who was highly decorated and the Rangers are sending a team for a 21 gun salute.

He is a Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus and they are sending the full color guard.

The American Legion and VFW are both sending chaplains.

Then on top of that I have been asked to delivery the eulogy which is scaring the "H" out of me.

Any Ideas?

I spoke at my mother's funeral and said what she answered when I had asked her to name 10 of her best qualities a couple of months before. That made it easy. I don't really know, but you may say why he was your close friend, maybe qualities that endeared him to you. You may have a stories that demonstrated his personality, strength, sense of humor, courage etc. You may tell what you will miss most about him. Because he is being honored by so many others, you will have lead-in to his special qualities and dedication. I know this isn't easy and my suggestions are rambling, but it's because it is a scary task. Don't think that it has to be certain number of minutes. It could be a simple statement of "Like so many of the rest of you, I appreciated and loved him. Though I know that he is at peace, I will miss him." or "I am a better man because he was in my life." I'm just giving random ideas. Hope it helps you. I am sorry for your loss.
