What to do about a kid at school has no lunch?

My son has a friend at school, 7th grade, who has not brought lunch to school or bought lunch so far this week. Last school year, the last 3 months of school he had nothing to eat. My son said the kid said his parents wouldn't refill his lunch account with money, yet he didnt bring food either. I told the counselor and she said she would find a way to speak with the family. Then later told me she spoke with them. (but of course there are privacy issues). But still that last month of school no lunch. So I packed extra in my sons lunch and the kid has some most days. Again, so far this year no lunch, so he ate grapes and a granola bar from my son. Do I try to keep doing this all year, or call the counselor again already? Try to offer to fill his lunch account? Or just butt out? I do not know the kid directly nor his family. The kid is muslim and I havent come across any restrictions as far as lunch food. Please no anti-religious comments. I live in a county that has nearly the top school programs in the country, you'd think the school should help.

Update:

I just read alot about meat/pork and muslims. We really only eat chicken at my house. So I hope the kid isnt worried about what's touched what, maybe he is afraid of any meat at school touching or being near other school foods. Either way, yes, he should have a packed lunch at least. My son brought extra grapes and chips to school today!

I am Muslim and have a 12 year old daughter in school She does not eat anything from the school cafeteria that has meat or meat by products.. She eats the fruit, or the raps with veggies only. We do pack her a lunch and she also eats energy bars. Please understand that the meat we eat at home is halal "similar to kosher." I understand why the child's parents don't want him / her to eat some things, however I don't understand why they don't send a lunch for the child. Also yes you should say something the the school as it is not healthy to skip lunch. But don't be surprised if it is the child's decision not to eat there and not to bring a lunch. Adam

Turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and mustard on total wheat bread. Carrot sticks and somewhat of fruit like an orange, apple, or banana. different techniques comprise pretzels and humus, or yogurt.
