  • 7 year old glowlight alone, should I get more tankmates?

I have a 7 year old glowlight that has been alone for 3 months. The last two other fish (platy and black neon) died. There were more fish in there a couple years ago. Anyway, I've added ghost shrimp and two mystery snails and live plants over the past month. Being that the glowlight is old, would it be a good idea or not to add more fish? I was thinking of getting 5 black neons. I don't want more glowlights cuz I don't want to mix him up with the others, so I can see how long he lives!! 15 gallon tank.

  • Goldfish pond or tank for the winter?

My husband does some volunteer work at a buddhist temple. The monks created a small pond this summer, about the size of 3 standard bath tubs. There were 17 goldfish in it, not sure what species. Not sure how well they were fed. They took all the fish out and put them in a 20 gal tank for the winter, about a week ago. Way over crowded, no plants, etc. My husband said the water is gettting gross. I don't know if they have the room to add more tanks to split the fish up.

Fish can survive winter in a pond, as long as you keep the ice broken at the top. Apparently, they hibernate if they were fed well in the summer. I am in MD, we get plenty of ice but it is always thin, so it would be easy to deal with.

My question is, should I just have the monks dump the fish back into the pond and give them some instruction on care? Or will this shock the fish? The temps here are fluctuating like crazy but it will be steady in the 40s for a few days. May be able to talk them into a second tank to split the fish up.

Any thoughts here? I am going over tonight to at least do a water change, worried about these poor fish. Thanks!!

  • Molly Fish Alone in Tank?

Is it ok to leave my last molly fish alone in a 10 gallon, or should I get another one or two? Could I have a few black neon tetras, or are those to fast for a Molly?

  • 12 year old alone in the evening?

I live in MD. You can be home alone at age 8 during the day, which I think is crazy. There are no laws about nighttime for older kids. My son is 12 1/2. At age 12 1/4 he was alone from 6pm to 8:45pm once (it was dark by 6). My car was having trouble so I was an 1 1/2 hours later, but I called him ever 1/2 hour. Another time at age 12 he was alone from 7pm to 9:45 pm (it was light til 8pm) when I went to dinner, and I called him 3 times! But thats it for evening. On a school night I would like to go to dinner and a concert. I would be gone from 6pm to 11:30pm. And 45 minutes from home. I trust my son not to get into anything and he says he will just watch tv and go to bed. Do you think I should leave him alone, even if I call 10 times? I don't think he will fall asleep while I'm out. My neighborhood is safe. Im just worried that he will end up being scared at some point.

  • How to Stop My Cat From Waking Me?

My cat Motley goes through phases in which he scratches at my bedroom door at 3 to 5 am. He is 4 yrs old, neutered, dsh orange tabby. I've had him since he was 2 1/2 weeks old (Ive done tons of fostering, so I knew how to raise him). He eats a high quality grain free food. He has some ocd behavior scratching the fireplace or kitchen cabinet 20 minutes at a time. I can not pill him with prozac as he can be aggressive (and I am spending alot of money on my 18yr old kitty right now). Anyway, I let him sleep in my room if it starts out that way before I go to bed. Once I get up to pee around 3-5am he gets up and leaves. But if he doesnt want to be in my room to start, I shut the door because if he does come in my room during the night he climbs on everything and knocks stuff over. So I shut the door and he is out there playing at 3am and scratches at my door. If I ignore it, it will go on til 5am just before I have to get up for work. So I get up about 5 times to scare him off, losing sleep all the time! Sometimes I will get up and sleep on the couch so he stays away from the door and my husband can sleep. So of course it takes another half hour till he stops playing. He does go outside (I have some acreage)about 1-4 hours a day, usually after dinner time. I do make efforts to play with him to burn energy after dinner if he doesnt go outside. I have tried one suggestion which was to make a moat outside the door, a cookie tray of water. But he loves water! Has anyone heard of a scat mat? I cant seem to find them. Any thoughts or suggestions? I really cant let him in my room once it hits 3am, he is wired and paws and climbs on everything. He does nap in my room everyday for an afternoon nap for hours.

  • What to do about a kid at school has no lunch?

My son has a friend at school, 7th grade, who has not brought lunch to school or bought lunch so far this week. Last school year, the last 3 months of school he had nothing to eat. My son said the kid said his parents wouldn't refill his lunch account with money, yet he didnt bring food either. I told the counselor and she said she would find a way to speak with the family. Then later told me she spoke with them. (but of course there are privacy issues). But still that last month of school no lunch. So I packed extra in my sons lunch and the kid has some most days. Again, so far this year no lunch, so he ate grapes and a granola bar from my son. Do I try to keep doing this all year, or call the counselor again already? Try to offer to fill his lunch account? Or just butt out? I do not know the kid directly nor his family. The kid is muslim and I havent come across any restrictions as far as lunch food. Please no anti-religious comments. I live in a county that has nearly the top school programs in the country, you'd think the school should help.

  • UVB Light Question for Anole?

So I am totally confused. Aside from a heat light, does the uvb light give off regular daylight to a lizard? If the lizard is in a room with a red heat light and a 5.0 uvb light, do I need to leave a bedroom light on, or is the uvb light giving daylight too?? Thanks.

  • General Leopard Gecko Questions?

I am researching leopard geckos. My son is asking to have one. I wan to compare to what I am reading, so here are my questions.

They are nocturnal, so will we ever see him during the day?

Will he make noise keeping my son up at night?

Are there other foods besides live crickets and worms to eat?

Where do you keep the crickets (outside?), I'd think they'd make noise?!

    How often do you feed?

Do I need both a heat lamp and day lamp?

Substrate, aspen bedding, coconut fiber, bark chips, tiles??

Branches for climbing up or different logs/rocks to climb on? Plus hiding spots.

How much handling should they have or not have?

How many days can they go without food (no I dont plan on starving it!)

Rescue from shelter or craigslist or pet store?

Any help would be appreciated. Trying to decide if this is for us.

  • Betta tank size for females?

I have a two and a half gallon tank from my previous male betta. I want to get two females now. I know the tank size will be fine, but could I do three females in a two and a half gallon? Keeping it clean is not a problem. I hear that one fish could bully the other if there are only two. I would not want to crowd my bettas, and I hate those tiny betta tanks they sell at the store. Maybe I should just get another male.

  • Glowlight fin. Did it grow back?

My tank had 3 glowlight tetras and other fish. Two glowlights died after treating with ick. I know who is who because their bodies and fins had differences. The one glowlight that survived had a chipped dorsal fin. I bought him that way. Its been a week since treating ick and all fish seem happy. My son noticed that his fin looks whole again, and it does. Is it possible that fins can repair to a full fin? Anytime I have had a fish with a chipped fin for any reason it stayed that way. But appears to be a normal dorsal fin now. Am I crazy or is this possible??

  • Found a great filter/aerator for bettas?

This is more of a comment for those who have a betta in a small tank! My betta is scared of a filter. He is in a 1 1/2 gallon tank. Water was getting too gross too often. Just found at petsmart a great little filter/aerator that is quiet. Dont know how good the filter quality is yet, but it is a great aerator. Keeps the water moving with little force. There is a choice of attachments too. I highly recommend the Mini Internal Filter by Tom aquarium products. It was only $15 for a 1 to 4 gallon tank size. It may be great in larger fish tanks as an added aerator. ++++!!!

  • Treating Ick with heat and salt?

My still cycling tank has Ick. Oh, no what did I do to stress my fish. 10 gallon. 6 fish, 6 week old tank. Fish were put in there 2 at a time. It has only been set to 76 degrees F. 4 of my tetras have a couple spots. 2 pristillas and 2 neons. I feel so bad. Years ago I treated a bad case of ick in a 5 g tank with that awful green stuff. It worked but stained everything. I felt guilty leaving my fish in a bare tank! Anyway, has anyone treated ick with a warmer tank and salt? I have read to keep the heat on 86 degrees F and use sea or aquarium salt, 1 tsp per gallon. and do 20% water changes everyday, vacuuming. And to do all this for 4 days until after you see there is no ick. May take 2 weeks. Any thoughts, suggestions??? My ammonia has been up for 3 days. Today at about .35-ish.

  • Tank cycling. Ammonia slightly high. What's next?

10 gallon tank. A few tetras in it. Been set up for 1 month. Ammonia yesterday and today is slightly high. About a .15 or .20. Do i leave it and it goes down or shall I do small water change and how often? When will it go to zero or is that up to my water changes? Ive had smaller tanks and never noticed the cycle, somehow worked out on its own I guess. Thanks, I just dont want the fishies to have any trouble!

  • 2 Glowlight tetras and one pristilla tetra. What else should I add?

I have a 10 g tank. Got two glowlights to start the tank. Two weeks later got a pristilla. Had him for a week now. I feel guilty because there aren't enough of each type. But I dont want to over load the tank while cycling. One glowlight is chasing the other, the pristilla seems lonely. I was hoping to get one more pristilla and some neons. Not sure how soon to get them and if this is the right choice. Im learning the folks at the fish stores dont know as much as fish owners online. My amonia is still fine, dont think its spiked and gone down yet. Need to get nitrate test though. Any thoughts. Tetras are new to me.
