There are plenty of free anti-virus softwares, I'd highly recommend using AVG, Malware Bytes, and Spybot Search and Destroy in conjunction with each other to make up for their shortcomings.

AVG is hands down the best free anti-virus software out there. I run it on all my computers.

That being said, it is a little bare-bones. I would highly recommend supplimenting it with a file backup service. I use and recommend My PC Backup. Give them a try.
