Questions about Windows 8?
I am thinking of upgrading my Windows Vista desktop to Windows 8. I have decided this is the time as the price for a Windows 8 upgrade is very reasonable. Will I be able to carry my Windows Vista programs over in the installation? Secondly, when I buy and download the installation file off the internet when Windows 8 is released, how many computers can I install Windows 8 on? Lastly, do you think it is a good idea to install Windows 8 over my copy of Windows 7 on my laptop?
I would like to add that I have tried Windows 8 using VMWare Player. The speed and stability has convinced me to install it over Windows Vista, especially considering I can forget all about Metro and just stay in Desktop (which is essentially Windows 7+) if I end up really hating Metro. It's really installing it over my Windows 7 laptop which I am unsure about. Also, no one has really explained whether or not I keep my Vista programs during the upgrade.

If changes like start menu and boot to metro Ui doesn't matters to you,
definitely update the Os.
Win8 is just awesome and the boot up times in only of 10 secs and all programs supports, which were supported by Vista,
The update will override the existing vista installation and move them to a folder name
C:\Windows.old
I'm personally using Win8Rp since 4 moths
Just Awesome OS
Windows 8 is releasing on 10.26.2012
You can install it to multiple machines but only thing you have to purchase different key for different machines
Yup upgrade it windows8 from 7 :)
Well different guys have different thinking,
according to me One Should never ever resist change
But you can do a dual boot f you want to get back to windows7 down the road :)
Goodluck mate!
EDIT
It does mate :) it is a override installation of OS!
Which means it copies the already installed programs and overrides it with windows8
And trust me, these days I hardly use Metro apps. only I see them while I start the machine
If you start to hate metro, just don't use it, other than metro it is just as win7+ with missing start menu!!

I understand your urge to flee from having to use Windows Vista, but I would go for Windows 7 instead of 8. As with any new system, Windows 8 will have its problems and will also take some time until all programs are Windows 8 compatible, since its a different type of OS.
Windows 8 is supposed to be a very quick system and much more stable than Vista (though this ain't hard..) but many users complain that it's more like a tablet OS than an OS created for a desktop or laptop computer. Then, do you really need that app interface on your desktop? It's a desktop, not a tablet, so I would personally be annoyed.. Windows 7 has all it needs, is quick and pretty stable.
About the programs, it always depends on what your using. Check the internet, to see whats compatible and what not.

I have installed W8 Release Preview on my Vista machine, and, while I love it, it will expire in 2013. But Win8 overrides my machines System Recovery menu meaning that when it expires I will be stuck with an Operating System that will shut down on me every 2 hours. Make sure that if you get Windows 8, you still have your Vista Installation disk, or you make another somehow (I know it is possible I just don't know how at this current moment) Because if something goes wrong or you want to revert to vista It might not be an option.
However, Windows 8 is a very attractive operating system and runs very smoothly even on my low-Spec machine :D I would recommend Windows 8.
Try downloading VMWare or VirtualBox and installing the release preview on The virtual machine to try it out before you fork out for something you don't want.

Go for Windows 7. Windows 8 will be radically different, and is designed for phones and tablets as opposed to PCs. You can see a video of it in action at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxbHawhzACA if you want to get an idea of what it will be like. It's cheap for a reason - bad buzz. It looks like Windows 8 will make Vista look like a rousing success.
Most of your Vista apps should work. When you buy Windows 8, the license is for one computer only. You'll need to buy a copy for each computer.
I've played with the previews, and have no intention of upgrading. When they stop supporting Windows 7 I'll just switch to Mac OS and Linux. My husband was so appalled by the previews that he just ditched Windows completely.

Honestly, I think Windows 7 is better for laptops than Windows 8. I've been using Win8 for some time now and I just wrote a tiny review about it here:

I think if you buy the Enterprise version, you can install it on +1 machines.
