Why will a new MacBook Pro not open .docx?

I recently purchased this computer for my daughter to use in college but she cannot open .docx files. She has no problems with .pdf files. Do I need to purchase and download Microsoft Office:Mac 2011 to get her up and running? I know very little about computers, even less about Mac's.

Thanks everyone

Well .docx is a Microsoft Word file. So you would need to download a version of the Microsoft Office Suite. Or you could possibly try Open Office which is free and would open up .docx files.

I'm an EasyTech at staples and we sell place of business for Mac OS X and those don't must be changed to move over to a machine going for walks home windows. That is when you consider that it's the equal file sort.
