When making homemade soap bars can you add.....?
I've recently tried my hand in making my own soap bars from melt and pour bases. I've used fragrance oil in them, and a few kitchen spices and they turned out fantastic(especially my Apple Blossom fragrance and ground cinnamon powder bars). But I have recently been wondering if I could add shredded coconut into the bars themselves as maybe like an exfoliate or to naturally scent the bars(which I know the scent probably won't be that strong when its a finished product). What I'm wondering is is it a good idea to add store bought shredded coconut to homemade soap bars? Since its not fresh shredded coconut I wouldn't think that it would actually go bad inside the bars but I honestly have no idea if it would or not being store bought dried coconut. Any suggestions would be awesome. Also is there any way to make my "own" coconut milk from the store bought shredded coconut? If so,any recipe suggestions to do so would be fantastic as well. Thanks so much for any answers =)

Wow we have an entrepreneur in the making!
The coconut tree has the most products produced specially from it's fruit. Coconut juice has vitamins and minerals and is a good diuretic for health purposes. Coconut oil is beneficial to the heart. In Asia they make coconut milk by scrapping out the white meat, putting the meat in a grinder and hand pressing the ground meat until the milk come out. The milk is used for zest and cooking flavor. You have a great idea for your exfoliating ingredient. It is better to use dried coconut fiber or scrapped bits from the coconut shell to be mixed in your soap formula. Using fresh coconut will not have grit and will not have exfoliating qualities. You can try to go to Asian stores and see if they sell dried husks or you can check Asian plant stores because they use husks for orchids and ferns.
It will be all in one if you just buy the coconuts fresh. Use the juice as beverage, crack open use the meat for producing milk. Let the coconut dry under the sun and when brown and dry you can use tools to scrape the husks and fibers to use for your soap products. For fragrance I guess you have to buy concentrated fragrance. Making fragrance from coconut is another process on it's own.

Shredded coconut from the store seems to last for AGES in my experience, all that happens is it goes a bit stale and dry. I've never made coconut milk myself but this recipe: http://voices.yahoo.com/how-coconut-milk-coconut-c... looks pretty easy! It sounds like a nice idea for a soap so I think you should give it a try, even if it doesn't work at least you've given it a shot :)

first you'll have to find a way to keep the coconut from molding in the soap, bacteria will build up in the soap also, and( if you use it don't put it on a cut or scraped skin) coconut milk will also go bad quickly, this is why oil is used not the milk or coconut.
