Traveling to Copenhagen in January?
I will be flying from San Francisco to Copenhagen, Denmark in January and will be visiting there for approximately 2-3 days. What is the weather typically like at this time? Is rain common, or is there a good likelihood of snow? What type of outerware is recommended? I do have a wool coat, but I was wondering if a different type of coat/jacket might be better.

The weather is typically miserable in January. Expect wind, rain, hail, snow, and very few daylight hours. You can be lucky and its a white winter wonderland with little wind, but you can be unlucky and it will be nothing but grey, icy cold rainstorms. Last year we had almost no snow in Denmark, but the previous year there was a lot. I live in the country and we were occasionally snowed in.
Outerwear, good, waterproof, warm boots. A warm jacket. A wool coat will be okay for shopping or going from the bus/car/train to your next destination. But if you are going to spend a lot of time outside, make sure that your winter jacket is warm and is water-resistant and wind-breaking. It is true that Denmark is generally not as cold as Sweden and Norway, but it will often feel colder because of the wind-chill factor.
For regular clothes, think in layers, stocking, socks, trousers, underwear, T-shirt, blouse, woolen sweater etc. Go for natural materials whenever possible. Layers are your friend when you are in Denmark because the weather changes so fast. And also you'll want to take off more than just your overcoat when you come in from the cold to the heat.
And welcome to Denmark. I hope you will enjoy your stay. :)
