What is the distance between the following points?

1. A(-3,-2) B(3,6

2. C(8,-10) D(-2,14)

3. E(-2,5) F(1,-1)

4. G(-2,3) H(4,-1)

5. I(-5,2) J(1,-4)

    The Distance Formula:

    √ [(x1 - x2)² + (y2 - y1)²]

    Use that formula to answer your questions.

    use the Pythagorean theorem.

    See the diagram below.

    See how the difference in x coordinates can be seen as representing one leg of a right triangle, and similarly, the difference in y coordinates gives the other leg?

    Then the distance is the length of the hypoteneuse of the triangle.

    Use the Pythagorean Theorem a^2 + b^2 = c^2 where a and b are legs of a right triangle and c is the hypoteneuse.

    This is how the distance formula is derived.
