Melting chocolate chips?

I need to melt semi-sweet chocolate chips to a fairly thin consistency. Tried adding milk which made things worse. What can i add to make it melt smoothly? Butter? Don't have any bakers chocolate so i'm working with what i've got. Can you shed some light? I just need enough to drizzle over coconut macaroons. Thanks so much.

Nooo. Don't add anything, melt them in a double broiler. Get a pot of water turned low-med heat, with a smaller bowl on top and put the chips in the small bowl and stir them as they melt. Careful not to splash any water in it or they'll go hard.

You can make chocolate ganache, which will be thin-ish and pourable. And will solidify after it cools on your macaroons.

    9 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped

    1 cup heavy cream

    Directions

Place the chocolate into a medium bowl. Heat the cream in a small sauce pan over medium heat. Bring just to a boil, watching very carefully because if it boils for a few seconds, it will boil out of the pot. When the cream has come to a boil, pour over the chopped chocolate, and whisk until smooth.

You can melt them in a dish in the microwave by heating for 30 seconds, stir, heat for 30 seconds more, stir and repeat if necessary until all are melted.

You could do this on the stove with 1/3 cup of heavy cream and 1 cup of chips over low heat.

Ok, put a bag of chocolate chips in a sauce pan, and keep stiring while the burner of the stove is turned on, to medium low, cooking until they're melted (you'll see all chocolate and no chips), then remove from the burner.

When I melt choco. chips, I heat them in a microwave just in a bowl. Since they're small, they don't necessarily need milk or butter along with them.
