The province of Quebec has roughly 8 million people who live here, and 3.8 million of those people live in the greater Montreal area.

The demographics of the province as of 2011 was about 80% spoke French, 10% spoke English, and 7% spoke a different language as their mother tongue (what they speak at home). The remaining 3% reported that they actually speak more than one language at home...1% French and English, 1% French and a non-English language, and 1% English and one or more other languages.

Interestingly enough, while 80% speak French at home in Quebec, it was reported that only 53% of them are unilingual French. And only 4% of the English were unilingual. The others have a working knowledge of both French and English.

The reason I brought up the population of Montreal area being nearly 50% of the province of Quebec is that most of the English-only and bilingual (English-French) can be found in this area. It is almost like two different worlds. If you spoke English on Sherbrooke Street in Montreal odds are good you would find someone to understand you. If you spoke English in downtown Rimouski, odds are not many will understand you, or be able to answer you.
